Does anyone know of a cheaper source for these?

or perhaps something else that will do the job?

I can't justify £16 on two little metal rings :(

What is the ID needed for these transatlantic?

If there's something matching (or close) in common steel or iron pipe you could just fit short lengths of that into the drilled holes. A trip to the local scrap merchants might net a length of something suitable for pennies.

20mm, most dogs are milled at 19.98mm I believe.

I would offer to make you some but BM101's link is pretty much ideal at around £0.71 pence each, the material realistically almost costs that much before putting a hole in it and a grub screw

Just make sure to pick up some flat point M6 x 8mm grub screws to go with them because it looks like the ones supplied with the rings are cone points which will ruin your dogs and leave pockmarks all over them, making it hard to put on and remove the rings as they will marr the surface and lock the ring in place!

Or go for the split / double split collars which should leave dogs untouched. I got some off the bay after seeing Peter Millard demoing the bench dogs ones but found the price a bit eye watering for what they are. Handy things when you need them!

What am I missing? I thought bench dogs were friction fit with a spring or other device?

Also, what's the point of using these collars? How do they get used?

The bench dogs I am talking about are the ones designed for an MFT type top (not the handtool spring mounted type)

Most bench dogs like the Parf dogs have the collar milled in place. So the amount protuding above the table cannot be adjusted. You push it into the 20mm hole until the (milled collar) touches the surface. Whilst they are a somewhat friction fit, you still want the collar to contact the table to stop it falling through with use, but more importantly, to make sure it is in square/plum. I'd also add that the friction fit gradually wears over time, there is less friction now with my top than there used to be.

So these collars simply allow you to adjust the location of the collar, so the amount protruding can be adjusted.

I use my guide rail with the UJK guide clips and the original parf dogs. But SUPER annoyingly, the TS55 motor bangs into the parf dogs due to their protrusion above the table. So with these collars and some 20mm dogs (without a milled collar), I can set the height so the motor can slide over them.

In theory.

To be honest, adjustable collars should probably have been part of the original design, then you wouldn't have needed to buy all the different sizes.
