Belt sander for wood

I have a scheppach bts 900x belt and disc sander the motor is ok but I have to hold the start button in to keep the motor running could anyone advise what is wrong.

Either the contactor coil has failed or there could dust in the off switch if it is an electrical one (some are mechanical)

Sounds very much like failure of the relay in the no-volt release switch. You may well need to replace the switch - they are available as spares though not all that cheap.

Has this worked in the past? I bought a new machine and the switch was wired backwards.
If it used to work but just stopped, then a new switch is what you need.

I wonder how much these switches vary in size, fitting a different size one may not be straightforward on some machines?

The actual switch is a standard size, the outers vary depending on manufacturers whim

I've had to replace the start capacitor on my B&D sander but lately the switch is reluctant to latch sometimes.
I'm wondering if it would be better to just fit a toggle switch when the contractor eventually fails?

Check you have good connections to the switch. They usually fail completely rather than go intermittent. Even a loose wire in the 3 pin plug would give that symptom.
