Hi all,

I recently received an old lathe with a plethora of extras. This piece looks like a screw chuck type thing. It separates into two with a small version inside.

Am I close to the mark or way off course?

Thoughts appreciated.

Cheers
Keith

Not screw chucks Keith, look more like a faceplate of some sort. Not sure about the point in the centre, some kind of centering device perhaps?

A screw chuck would have a 6mm or bigger wood screw type thread in the centre, usually with a parallel shaft (but not always, I have seen tapered ones too) and would be at least 35mm in length.

That makes sense. I wanted to try my first small bowl, so might give this a go. We have an abundance of pine and spruce at the farm. Loads dried for at least 2 years for firewood so think I'll dabble with that.

Cheers

The one on the right looks like a faceplate as KimG says - take care with what screws you use don't use tapered heads if there is no taper on the faceplate for the taper to fit into to - it can crack the faceplate.

The two on the left I don't think are faceplates, they look to me like a small donut chuck with the three bolts joining the two pieces together and trapping the wood - https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=donut ... d=0CCAQsAQ
- but I can't see what you would use them for, they are very small.
