Montana bear country wisdom:
Never go into bear country alone. Then, you don't have to outrun the bear, you just need to outrun your companion(s).
Always carry pepper spray and wear bells in bear country.
It is easy to tell which bears have been in the area. Black bear scat has berries and leaves in it. Grizzly bear scat smells like pepper, and has little bells in it.
