Basic router bit set

I've just got my first router (Festool OF1010) and need to get my self some bits to go with it. Funds are tight so I don't want to spend too much, especially whilst i'm getting familiar with it.

Most sets of cutters seem to come with lots of bits I can't see myself ever using. Ideally I only want a set that has 4 or 5 bits in it.

In the short term i need to trim some edging and cut out some shapes in some 18mm ply and mdf, potentially some drawer handle grooves/cutouts too. I think all i really need is some straight cut plunge bits, a guided flush trimmer bit and something to round off the edges.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Needs to be 8mm or 1/4 shanks. My quick search brings up the following:

I was going to suggest the Trend - I have used the 1/2" set for years, and can't fault it. Once you get used to your router, you'll be surprised how many bits you find uses for.

I suggest that you buy a cheap set, and as you use and blunt them, replace it with a decent cutter, trend, or whatever,
which will last, but each will probably cost as much as you're original cheap set.
Far better than, as you say, having expensive ones not used.

Just buy what you need, as you need it.
Buy good quality and you won't regret it, Trend or Wealden.
Easy and no waste.

When I first got my router I also got a cheap set of bits as I didn't have any specific needs. As you say know what jobs you need to do and what bits you'd need, then just buy exactly what you want.

I'd still say to get a cheap set at some point for when you just want to experiment with the different bits to see what you can do.

I bought a trend 30 pcs set and I've used most of them. I didn't think I'd use round overs much but it is amazing how often they are useful. I also found that dovetails make a perfect grove for iPhone stands! Why not get a small trend set and add to it as required?
