Hi all

I have a new to me bandsaw (Startrite 301E). My question here is, does anyone get there Startrite bandsaw serviced, if so what is a rough price and does anyone know of any decent service engineers/companies in/near North Essex tha do this and if so any chance of the contact details. I have contacted ALT and am just awiting a reply.

Many thanks

Ric
What do you mean by "servicing"? A bandsaw does not have plugs, points and oil... :)
Provided that the bearings are sound (and you will know if they are rumbling) and the tyres are in reasonable condition (just look at them) and the guides and thrust bearings are working properly (again, it will be obvious if they are not) then it is just a case of setting the saw up. If I am not mistaken, you have some excellent guidance on how to do that! :)

Hi Steve

I do indeed, I am of the ilk of if there is a motor on it get it PPM'd. I am not an electrical engineer and so if I can keep it running for a long, long time then I will do my utmost to do so. I have done the fetteling and what I can, but it is the electrics I want to insure are reliable, hence the question of servicing.
I would rather spen 60 or 70 quid on it once a year then several hundreds in a single payout to buy a new one.
Cheers

The electrics on said machine (and most others) are supremely reliable. A good quality motor combined with a good switch and starter with a few wires inbetween should run pretty much for ever. Any faults that may or do occur, will not have been prevented by servicing. If you had the electrics, say, stripped and cleaned once a year, you are more likely to actually cause a problem!

Enjoy your bandsaw and definately save your money each year :)

The same can be said for gas boilers, but many will disagree

As a user all you really need to do is to make sure the saw is set up well, decent blade and feed the stock in at a sensible rate. That's just about it apart from good dust extraction.

If you are really concerned you could alway put the money to one side and if it did ever breakdown you would have a fund to cover it
