Does anyone know if Axminster usually have a January sale? Getting ready to place my order and wondering if I should wait a few weeks.

From what I can see most stores are doing their discounting now, trying to get people to spend before Xmas, I can't really see many of them discounting further after Xmas, especially on non-seasonal products.

I could be wrong, and may well end up regretting having just bought a few hundred quid's worth of tools, at what I thought were good sale prices, when I see the prices tumble even further in 3 weeks time!

I would first ask (I wasn't paying attention then 'cos I was skint) if Axminster had a sale last January. If the answer was yes then they would probably have another.
From my day job (one of the top 3 supermarkets) I know that HQ can produce a sale with 24 hours notice or less.
It might be a wait & see policy. If the balance sheet is low they might start something.

Alex.

I bit the bullet and placed my order. If there is a sale, I will only cry a little bit
Good shout as Axminster put up their prices in January - Rob

Under European rules if a shop puts on a sale within 2 weeks of you purchasing an item you can ask them to refund the difference (and they have to!).
If you have never heard about this before do I really have to explain why?

I'd not heard of this rule before. Anyone else? Please do explain :D

A "10% off the highest price item when you spend 50 quid" leaflet arrived through the post this morning :ho2

I was have been waiting over a year saving to buy a table saw, planer thicknesser, mobile bases and a chip extractor funds and price permitting maybe a bench mortiser and went to Axminster the other day to get a quote and they actually didn't offer hardly any discount or were there prices very competitive the only thing they offered was a free blade which you actually get online anyhow. However they did say they put there prices up in January so order now, I was going to take the risk and wait thinking that it was a hard sale to meet sales targets!!!

I'm also going to be buying stuff soon, and was thinking the same, that perhaps it's better to wait 3 weeks for some January sale.

judging by previous years, is it worth the wait?

I have just spoken to someone who has a sneak look at some of axminsters prices for next year. The 950 jet chip extractor is going up by 6% and the jet 600 table saw is going up by 17% jet pt260 planer/thicknesser 16%. Don't think I'll be waiting till January .... Some of there bigger machines are increasing by even more !!!!

I would be surprised they do not have any special offers when January comes, even if it added extras at same price. Its a buyers market at present. Tool suppliers always have offers on look at Dewalt and Festool, etc as a example.

Though not in the market for this end of the market I would question the increases before getting rid of stock. The larger machinery manufacturers have ongoing production needing to be sold and heavily discounting at present for nearly immediate delivery as long as standard. The Italians have been on shorter weeks and even closing production for short periods it pays to shop and who is holding stock or needing to meet sales targets.

Due to purchasing larger machinery I feel I see more variety in choice of a similar quality of product to meet my needs compared to smaller/cheaper machinery sector. You always get the best specialising in machinery but the mark up seems to be decreasing due to getting rid of stock. I was in the market for three machines, A CNC Spindle, CNC C Axis Router and CNC Edge Bander. The discounts were there and did not need a lot of prying or dealing to acquire them. I was actually surprised that the Roll Royce's were well within the intended budget planned. A lot of Free extras were to be had as well. Or is the market becoming realistic to actual cost compared to the boom years?

My name is Martin Brown and I am part of the Axminster team. This is therefore a commercial post, relating to this thread.

Go to Axminster.co.uk for our clearance sale that started today.

I have just noticed that the TS200 saw package is set to rise by an incredible £69.99 from £349.96 to £419.99. I would have thought that at present it simply has to be a buyers market, so I'm struggling to understand how such a significant increase can be justified. In a roundabout way, it also begs the question if the saw is even worth that kind of money now.

I know times are hard, but they're hard for all of us and pricing us out of buying the things we want with what little we've got, particularly after Christmas when retailers traditionally try to shift more stock through reduced prices in a January sale, just doesn't make sense to me, financial or otherwise.

I got in whilst it was £299, just before the New Year when it went up to £350. It was definitely worth that money, probably even after the rise but, £419 ?? I'm not so sure. I think I would have been looking for something better SH at that price.
That said, should the SH route prove fruitless, you're looking at another £300 - 400 above that to get anything better.

Looking through the new APTC catalogue, which arrived yesterday, I see many significant increases across the board. Whilst accepting that I'm comparing prices from 1/1/11 to 31/12/12 (to which they will presumably hold these prices) - a 2 year period, it has pushed some items beyond what I'm willing to pay and with many items they are no longer competitive. I expect to be buying less from them in the coming year.

Just spent some paypal* pennies in the Axminster clearance sale.
£124+ down to £50.20, so no postage either - and that was without trying! :D

*I used paypal so I can reduce my balance without connecting it to my bank account - I still don't completely trust Paypal!
