Axminster are offering a set of 12 carving tools for £27 instead of £45. Has anyone any experience of these? There are 4 mixed reviews on the Axminster web site. At £2 odd per chisel, is this just too cheap, even for occasional use by a beginner to carving?

Hmm.. well, back in only March these were on the website for £37, and last year they were £27 normal price, so that 'offer' doesn't seem like much of a great deal, especially as they don't appear, if the reviews are correct, to be put together or finished very well.

Not bought them myself though so I can't comment on actual experience, but for that price, I wouldn't expect much, and I would expect to spend a while sharpening and honing. I highly doubt these are anywhere near ready to use out of the box.

I think that set may well put you off carving, they seem to be a fair way off usable condition and in need of quite a bit of work. That will be the sort of work you can't easily do until you have a little experience of what you need.

I would recommend you spend just a fiver more on the Henry Taylor set of palm chisels. They will be ready to go and with a useful selection to give you a good intro.
