Our judge for July is away for a few days, so the results from last month's Challenge will be delayed until his return next week. In the meantime, here are the requirements for the August Challenge:-

The August Challenge is for a goblet. Richard Findley has kindly agreed to judge this month’s Challenge, and there will be a plaque for first place, kindly made for us by forum member Daven. Many thanks to both!!

Challenge Requirements: A goblet

This month’s rules are:-

1. The Challenge is open to anyone and everyone.
2. Entries must be new and made specifically for the Challenge.
3. Entries must be made of a single piece of wood which must be turned on a lathe using woodturning tools.
4. For the purposes of this challenge a goblet is defined as a “wine glass shaped” vessel suitable for drinking from, which has a thin stem and a base.
5. The only size restriction is that the goblet must be suitable for sensible use as a drinking vessel.
6. Segmented turning, piercing and carving are not allowed.
7. Colouring, pyrography and texturing are allowed, but the principal requirement is for the judge to be able to see your turning skills, and to gauge the form and finish of your entry.
8. The choice of wood and the finish do not need to be suitable for drinking from, but the goblet's form should be such that it appears to be suitable for use as a drinking vessel.

Please post 3 images of your work along with a brief note about how you made it, what wood, tools and finishes you used and the dimensions of your entry (particularly wall thickness, stem thickness, goblet bowl depth and diameter, base diameter, overall height).

Images needed:-

1 top view (the inside of the goblet bowl)
1 showing a general side view of the goblet
1 bottom view

A fourth picture may be added (but is not compulsory) if needed to show any other interesting details of your entry.

Image size - please use image size 640 x 480 0.3 mp, as in previous challenges

Please upload your pictures and description between 10pm on the 27th August and 10pm on the 29th August.

Please also send me a PM giving me your own opinions of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places amongst the entries (other than your own) between 10pm on 29th August and 10pm on 31st August (for me to compile the entrants’ scoring).

Any queries or questions on this month’s Challenge, please use this thread to ask.

I may have a go at this one

can this be made in parts from the same bit of wood?

or does it have to be kept whole and turned as one ?

Steve

Better late than never, but the lathe will be back on it's bench in the near future so hopefully I might get some entry's in!!!

For any of you unsure how to make a goblet for this month's Challenge, see pages 67-71 of the September 2014 edition of Woodturning magazine. Philip Greenwood shows you how to make a simple yet elegant goblet. So now you have no excuse not to enter ......................

So snifter ok? and if piercing not allowed, no inclusions or naturally occuring holes either? thx

If by "snifter" you are referring to a brandy goblet, then this would be within the rules, although may not win any "artistic merit" award as they are not that pretty (IMO). Any natural holes would not render the entry inadmissible, but I would not expect to see any entry made from, for example, a Banksia nut.

Hope that helps.
