Please post you entries for the August 2014 Woodturning Challenge on this thread.

Challenge Requirements: A goblet

This month’s rules are:-

1. The Challenge is open to anyone and everyone.
2. Entries must be new and made specifically for the Challenge.
3. Entries must be made of a single piece of wood which must be turned on a lathe using woodturning tools.
4. For the purposes of this challenge a goblet is defined as a “wine glass shaped” vessel suitable for drinking from, which has a thin stem and a base.
5. The only size restriction is that the goblet must be suitable for sensible use as a drinking vessel.
6. Segmented turning, piercing and carving are not allowed.
7. Colouring, pyrography and texturing are allowed, but the principal requirement is for the judge to be able to see your turning skills, and to gauge the form and finish of your entry.
8. The choice of wood and the finish do not need to be suitable for drinking from, but the goblet's form should be such that it appears to be suitable for use as a drinking vessel.

Please post 3 images of your work along with a brief note about how you made it, what wood, tools and finishes you used and the dimensions of your entry (particularly wall thickness, stem thickness, goblet bowl depth and diameter, base diameter, overall height).

Images needed:-

1 top view (the inside of the goblet bowl)
1 showing a general side view of the goblet
1 bottom view

A fourth picture may be added (but is not compulsory) if needed to show any other interesting details of your entry.

Image size - please use image size 640 x 480 0.3 mp, as in previous challenges

Please upload your pictures and description between 10pm on the 27th August and 10pm on the 29th August.

Please also send me a PM giving me your own opinions of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places amongst the entries (other than your own) between 10pm on 29th August and 10pm on 31st August (for me to compile the entrants’ scoring).

Roundup

Goblet in quilted soft maple, a piece of which I had left over from turning some tops. I had some isssues with getting a smooth finish on this , as I did on the tops. It almost seemed kind of punky soft. After turning with spindle gouge and a shear scrape with a round nose scraper, I sanded to 320, then about 12 coats of spray lacquer, sanded a bit with some dull 320, and then waxed with Claphams, then buffed up with the Oneway 3 wheel system. It is 5 -3/4" high and 2-3/4" in diameter at the top.The bowl is about 1/16" thick. Thanks to all and please support the challenge.

Here is my effort, made in Purpleheart. It's 270 mm high and 70 mm wide at the rim. Turned using a skew, spindle gouge and round nosed scraper, and I used a forstner bit to remove most of the waste from the cup. It's the first time I've used purpleheart, it turned out to be a difficult wood to turn with some tearout. Regular sharpening of tools and very light cuts needed. My first goblet, apart from a quick practice on some softwood.

Hi this is my 6 inch high Goblet not sure on the wood I think its a Mock Cherry. this is the first time I have made a goblet and had a few problems. I tryed to make a larger one using a tennis ball to help holding it but that did not work so had to reduce the size. As it was turning I found the wood was very hard and was blunting my tools. The tools I used to make it where scraper,skew-chisel,hollowing tool and bowl gouge all turned on the lathe and sanded down to 400 grit and finished with 3 coats of sanding sealer and friction polish.

Well this is my entry I found it challenging in that trying to make all the curves flow into each other.
Made from Ash and turned from one piece. Measurements below
11 1/2" tall
2 1/2" at its widest
4" depth inside of the bowl section
1/8" thickness of the bowl tapering to a thinner lip
5/8" at the thinnest part of the stem
2" across at the base
3/16" ring thickness

Turned with bowl gauge, scrapers, hollowing tool, and spindle gauge. All sanded to 600grit. Inside the bowl was finished with sander sealer and melamine lacquer outside finished with sander sealer and buffed on a three wheel buffing system.

In the first photo there is a clip on the far side of the rim which is only there to support the rings for the photo and show the grain

I didn't think I was going to be able to produce anything in time again this month but some last minute jiggery pokery produced this.
This is my first goblet so I decided to keep it simple ( like I had a choice :) )
Size 10 inches tall by just under 3 inches wide. Stem is half inch. I had to make a spindle steady to stop the bowl vibrating while I hollowed it.
This is made from Elm with the use of square and round carbon cutters and a big round ended scraper, four coats of cellulose sealer and two coats of MC wax.
Must get a decent camera / lighting set up.

Firstly a confession, I may have bent rule 3, though it did start as one piece of wood !

This ‘thistle’ goblet is turned out of Cherry and after rounding off the block I removed much of the actual goblet with a forstner bit before moving on to a bowl gouge, hollowing tool and bowl scraper to finish off the inside. A couple of bowl gouges the shaped the outside and the top section was then finished by sanding to 600 and applying two coats of slightly thinned sanding sealer with a very light sand in between.

Attention then moved to the stem with some router mat fitted into the bowl and the tailstock used to provide some support. The stem was started at the bowl end and then moved towards the foot, and after trying to cut a ring (and failing !) I then decided that an echo of the thistle shape would look good. Having got the stem roughed out I then went back to tidy it up and discovered that the bottom of the bowl was now slightly thinner than I thought – resulting in a handy ‘travel goblet’ that comes in two easy to fit parts – might be a tad leaky though ;-).

Not having time to start again I thought I might as well post it since it doesn’t look too bad (from a distance), though I’ve run out of time to give it the buffing I had intended.

The dimensions are :
Height : 237mm
Max Bowl width : 78mm
Bowl depth : 90mm
Bowl Thickness : 2.3 mm (tending to 0 at the bottom !)
Narrow bit stem width : 7.8mm
