Roundup

I was really looking forward to this one but ran out of time and timber :( So here we have the MK1 with a slight design opportunity

Had a small blank of Zimbabwe white ebony(?) and tried to get both the cup and the saucer out of it. but that would have been a very short cup so I glued an off cut of birch ply to the top. Then turned the cup and saucer as one. Then decided that was cheating so tried to separate them and yep! straight through the bottom  but my own stupid fault.
Didnt have any more timber or time so the saucer has unique design feature so the bottom of the cup doesnt get wet
Had a tiny piece of ironwood branch so turned a small disc and cut a slot n the side (after a few practice goes on some scrap) and created the handle. Its a push fit at the moment but could be glued in place if it grows on me.

sanded to 400 and a quick coat of soft wax.

Sycamore cup and saucer from a log 135mm dia 50mm high
Turned as one. Finish wax.
Had to stop work on the bottom a little early while reversed chucked due to the beingings of light shining through in one place where the cup joins the saucer.

NB I would respectfully remind the judge that cups do not need handles - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teacup . :)
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Brian

My entry is in beech. I particularly like the rotted bit on the saucer. The handle is spalted beech from the same tree. Finish is home made paste wax.

Ok - My second month in a row. Have to say I am enjoying using the challenge to spark the imagination; all be it I am actually trying for simple forms; in this example my focus was making sure that the base of the cup fitted the saucer 'in-dent' which I am pleased to say it does (but the photos are not clear enough)

The Saucer is 16cm x 2.5cm - made from Sapele.
The Cup is 7.5cm (wide) x 7cm tall - made from Ash.

I am trying to sign my pieces - bit pretentious I know; but I do hope to significantly improve; and if I keep signing the bottoms, by the time my turnings are looking really good - then hopefully so will my 'signature' - any tips gratefully received.

Ps I am with Brian on this - a cup doesn't need a handle....

Cup in Arbutus, from the left coast of Canada with a handle of yew, from northern Vancouver Island and a saucer in Black walnut from eastern parts. Grabbed a chunk of arbutus( its kind of cool in that it sheds its bark and keeps its leaves, to some extent and exposed bits are pinky orangey) and hollowed it out and then reversed into cole jaws and cleaned up the bottom. Saucer pretty much the same, only on spigot jaws at first in between centers as the blank was only about 7/8" thick . Handle was a small chunk of yew in the chuck, turned round, then drilled and parted off and then over the oscillating belt sander to shape to shape and shape to fit the curve of the cup.Used bowl gouges and scrapers on the cup and bowl gouges on the saucer and the handle. Handle is glued on and the finish is lacquer. Really enjoyed this one although running a bit late.Saucer is 3/4" by 5" and the cup is 3 1/8" diameter by 3 1/4" high. Thanks to everyone involved and lets see some support. Everyone is busy I realize but do it. Oh, and a cup should have a handle.

Here's my paltry attempt,

Sycamore with a slice of walnut in the cup. I turned it from two pieces and two seperate trees i think, the cup took badly to the wax finish. Tried to keep it simple on this one.
