Can anyone recommend an 8mm auger?
I'm reluctant to spend £40 on a piece of junk.
Thanks!
Sorry,everyone-I should have been more specific. I meant a long hole borer for a lathe
Thanks for the replies, anyway.

Any chance you have access to someone with a metal lathe.

I made this one up myself.

The rod is 8mm/5/16" mild steel, about 70 Pence a foot. the Drill bit is standard HSS spur wood bit, tenoned & silver soldered on the end.

Chas, thanks for the idea. I did similar, but not having a metal lathe, I butt jointed the two parts. I just got a piece of angle iron, cut a hole in it, put it on a couple of fire bricks and put the bar and bit in it with the join over the hole, and brazed them. I made two, one with a lip and spur, and one with standard hss bit. The ordinary bit is quicker and doesn't appear to be any less accurate- it is easier to sharpen as well.
