On this coming Saturday, there is the short-notice auction of a joinery business and it includes what has been described to me as:-
10" Norris plane
10" Mathieson
12" Sorby (presumably that's actually just the iron, not an actual Sorby plane)
Stanley 65, 72, 78, 110, "7 inch American Stanley" "low front knob Stanley"

No58 and 65 shaves.

There's no actual catalogues or much detail other than the advertisement in the Aberdeen Press and Journal, but they sound potentially interesting to someone.
Problem: the auction is in Forres, up here on the north east Scotland coast, but if anyone wants more detail, pm me. I'm hoping to go along if only for interest, keeping a tight hold on my wallet.

Managed to get to have a look at the stuff at the sale, and wished I hadn't :( Despite the very tepid advertising, it was an absolute Aladdin's cave of stuff. The Norris (oval smoother, lot no 55 appropriately enough) was obviously assumed to be the star, but there was a whole heap of good and interesting planes, including a fully adjustable Stanley chamfer plane, the like of which I'd never seen. Dozens of other interesting little items, like a dowel chamfering tool, what was probably a round tenon cutter for use in a standard brace, Disston hand saws, two brand new S&J handsaws with the incised decoration on the handle, chisels by the dozen (of variable quality, but some good stuff) and dozens of odd vintage marking/measuring tools etc., etc.
Only about 40, mostly commercial, buyers there, BUT they didn't start the tools until about 3 hours into the auction, and (probably fortunately!) I couldn't stay that long because of some other commitments. Don't know if the auctioneer will have a record of prices, but it would be interesting to know what stuff made

Just to bring this story to a sort of close; this morning was the first Sunday it had been warm enough to bring out the car-booters at Thainstone. One of the stallholders had a variety of old tools, including a bag of odd chisels and gouges, each bearing what was recognisably a label from the Forres auction. He'd been there for the old tools, and said that the Norris, and several American Stanleys, had each fetched £300+. Someone he had spoken to had spent upwards of £12k on the old stuff, so no bargains by the sound of it.

One of the miscellaneous chisels was this Sorby paring gouge. He wanted £5 for it, but let it go for £4. Seemed like a reasonable price, but others may know different.
