At the risk of appearing thick :) can anyone tell me why, this room at Astley Hall is so "out of plumb" subsidence? poor workmanship :? I know it's old but HEY!

It's probably built that way to match the slope in the corridor above.

Lots of reasons and I'm sure Mike G wll be along shortly. It's a bit tricky to see i detail as your lens geometry isn't the best (sorry..) unless the wall on the left of frame bottom picture is actually leaning out - in which case, you've got a superduper lens.

Here's a couple of reasons..

You can get bellying of outer walls - ie bow in both vertical and horizontal directions if the external walls have no tie-ins through the house to tie the external walls together and/or excessive weight on the roof - think pressing down on a blancmange.

Rarely did these properties have foundations and so over the years the soil is going to settle differentially.

Lack of basic engineering knowledge as to how buildings should be built!
