I've been looking for a Welsh dresser or similar but in ASH. So far, I've only found one manufacturer but they're in Ireland (deaneryfurniture.com) and won't export to mainland UK because of the paperwork hassle ! Anyone any ideas??

Is the issue with ash there that it's restricted due to the borer? Or does that not affect ash in the UK?

There's still a lot of ash in the UK, but after the initial glut on the market from borer affected trees, retailers seem to have realized they are better off either selling it as if the logs are still expensive or not at all.

It's dieback that's causing the problems (devastation) with ash here. Dressers were/are traditionally pine or oak, not ash - that's where the problem lies.

Same here and same with furniture - not a lot of ash. Wood used depends on era (from pine, mahogany, cherry, maple to more recently oak, maple cherry and pine - a lot of white oak between those two periods).

Ash is heavily used in guitars (that's a small consumer), baseball bats and basket making.

Our oaks are not as nice as your brown oak. They make durable furniture, but brown oak is heaven for a hand maker. white and red oak here are more like a bundle of splinters.
