OK, nev, I'll start the queries:-

Can it be something imaginary that just could or might be in outer space?
Is carving allowed?
Can materials other than wood be used in an ancillary capacity? (for supports for example)

I'm sure I will think of more questions as time goes on!!

!
I guess a lot of what we think of as outer space e.g. flying saucers, are or were originally from someones imagination, so I guess the answer is yes. I suppose the test would be when someone sees it will it invoke thoughts of outer space or related ideas??

Yes - as decoration, embellishment or enhancement.

Yes.

Just got back from UK and last minute as usual.
Question. How do you reverse a disc so that it's finished on both sides? Preferably without a mounting hole in it.

The obvious answer is Cole Jaws but that's of no use to you as it would seem you don't have any.
file.php

But if you can live with a small central bit to clean up by hand you can trap the piece against a faceplate with a piece of foam or anti slip matting underneath it and use a rotating tailstock to form the clamping.

To aid alignment you can mount a disc of scrap wood (plywood) on the faceplate and turn alignment recess or just groove rings in it.

If you can finish both sides of the edge in the first instance you can 'fix' the disc to the faceplate with dabs of Hot Melt Glue around the edge, Seal the wood before gluing and Glue will peel off easier.

Will be touch and go as to whether I will be in this month or not. ...
I've concentrated on the box competition more and am away next weekend so we'll see!

What Chas says.

and along similar lines but without glue gun, take a large scrap of pine or whatevers handy, mounted on a face plate, turn a recess to accept turned piece as a push fit (with paper towel to prevent marking) and supported by live centre in tail stock. turn and finish outer three quarters then wrap loads of gaffer tape around turning and faceplate leaving the inner half uncovered, remove tailstock and gently turn finish and blend into previously finished outer part.
