I installed a new power feed to the garage last year, and with the voltage drop the max supply has been calculated at 7KW. I am looking at buying a decent used combination machine (Hammer / Felder), but the majority of them are 3 phase and I wonder whether I can just use an inverter

Interested to hear any comments from anyone who has done such a thing or has looked into this.

Thanks

I'm no expert on things electrical by any means, but last year we bought a big old 3 phase Colchester lathe from a neighbouring workshop that was closing down, we got it for next to nothing, but as we don't have a 3 phase supply in our workshop we had to buy an inverter to run it.

All I can say is that it works perfectly and the inverter was not expensive, the whole lathe/inverter package was considerably cheaper than buying a similar single phase machine. We are now looking at buying more 3 phase machines and running them the same way, the price difference makes it very attractive.

Did you have to get a specialist in to fit and configure the inverter or was it a relatively painless exercise that you can do yourself?

Our workshop is part of Shepperton Film Studios and we have to use their sparks to make any major changes to the electrics, for insurance purposes you'd probably have to do the same at home, at least technically, but I doubt it's very difficult if you wanted to do it yourself. I know several people who've installed their own inverters on boats and caravans.

If your hammer machine is a multi-motor beast (which I suspect it might be) the I would strongly advocate a converter otherwise you will be needing to modify the interlocks and control circutry

See my paper to understand the differences.

I've used a 3ph Hammer panel saw running on a transwave phase converter and it worked perfectly well
