Hi All,

I am building a 40m2 cabin in Essaouira southern Morocco and was wondering if there are any surfer carpenters out there who would be interested in a couple of months surfing and building. Project should start around November.... just in time for the best waves.

We are building an Eco project with sea views as naturally as possible.

We have 3 international level spots within 15 minutes that pump all through the winter.

Anybody with timber frame experience interested reply to the thread or drop me a PM

Many thanks,

Anthony

I have occasionally called myself a surfer and a carpenter but the truth is that I'm pretty average at both. Were I younger and in different circumstances, I'd be seriously interested in this but sadly I cannot.

Hope you get the people and the waves you're after.

Good luck

we have on occasion used work away people.....
They help this old fella with the heavy jobs.....
IN RETURN....they leave with a few extra skills and a notch or two on their waist line......hahaha...
she's an excellant cook....and a good excuse to bake cakes.....
u cant have afternoon T without cake, right....!!!!
they last guy wanted to learn to Arc weld.....very competent when he left.....
gives you a good feeling to pass on skills....

good luck with your project....

Workaway.info what a fantastic thing. Done a couple of stints on there including helping rebuild a castle in the Pyrennees and 6 months at an atellier in the Jura when it first started. Need to re-do my membership

It's a great chance for a young fella.
....and 6 months at an atellier in the Jura when it first started.
An Atelier like Basil Fawlty?
Fair play Droogs.
I never fancied the long hours in the Atell Industry myself.

What a great craic for a the right candidate.
I did a fair bit of stuff that involved labour for experience when I was a young fella with no ties. I regret none of it now. Not a day.
Except one day.
Was helping this carver erect a statue at the Greenwood Centre near Bangor. My lass at the time was doing a volunteer thing there but was sick. Can you go? I had a day off.... Ok. I spent 5 hours grafting with a billhook and cleaving break. Lunchtime I went to the cafeteria. Picked up a sandwich , drink and a cake slice.
The woman who stalked the cafeteria (who was training for the Gestapo... Nurse Ratchet type) noticed and said ..... You are not allowed zee cake. Only zee sandvich andzee drink.
*Me (internally): You. F***ing. What.
As a young fella who had just spent a full morning expending my muscles and energy for free I explained the situation nicely. No. It's a slice of cake. I'm eating it love.
You can't.
Ok. I think , that, look... I'm unwrapping it. An.... noooow I'm eating it. In front of you.....Now. Are we a bit clearer now? Then I picked up another slice and ate that too.
Gestapo lady had a melt down. I had an argument or two. The girlfriend at the time wasn't pleased.
I ended up leaving a mallet there.
Not a great day altogether.

Surfing in Morrocco sounds good mind!
As a young fella I'd have loved to do this.
Even though, like Charlie, I don't surf.

The first two will find you any number of young and enthusiastic helpers, but probably not a carpenter. Wwoof is a bit more serious minded, as it is theoretically about organic farming, so you get more vegan tree - hugging. We did once get a master carpenter who specialised in oak framing via Wwoof, so you never know...

Thanks for the websites everyone... we will check em out. Like you said great for a young improver or somebody who wants a break from UK in a lock down winter.

It's not age but circumstance Droogs.
I'd go tomorrow. Still would. I really would. Mrs and Kids might have summat to say. There you are. Is what it is.
Also, tbf to Antho. I'm no timber framer. Soo....

one of those we had brought the wife and kids (2)......turned out real well....
on the plus side between her and mine they were always baking cakes.....mmmmm, fresh cake......hahaha....
last I heard they were off to Romania.....

I used to do a lot of backpacking in the 80's and 90's, been to all sorts of places and done all sorts of jobs but I was never in a position to work only for food and accomodation. I needed to earn money to travel on to the next place. Now that I'm more financially secure I could happily contemplate doing something just for the experience but I would like to try and get something in return such as, learning a new skill, rather than just doing work for free. I looked extensively through the workaway website and could not find one host that offered anything of any substance in exchange for skilled work. Most of them were just looking for someone to do the crappy jobs like gardening, cooking, cleaning, babysitting so that they could do the building work themselves.

I’m specifically looking for somebody who can build. As I say we can discuss money and expenses but it just won’t be anywhere near UK wages but would be more than the average local earns plus a few other perks along rhe way and obviously a beautiful place and a great experience
