not much help there, I'm prepared for the noise. I was thinking more of build quailty and reliability.
I try to not buy on price alone, but i wonder why this is a hundred less than the makita

Just a thought, does the Makita have an induction motor, can't seem to find an answer to that question, they just mention that its extremely quiet.

Mike

That was one of the points in its favour, but its not a hundred quids worth of favour.

I have the Jet model. It is noisy. Has done plenty of work, for what it cost I'm well pleased. With nice sharp blades the finish is pretty good. Replacement blades are fairly cheap if like me you hit the odd nail or bit of grit. The only draw back is the small waste outlet. Definitely needs extraction as it blocks easily.

ok, thats good to know. I have a permanent waste system to connect it to.

I'm getting axminster to quote for "to my door" for both models, we'll see what happens.

I see the triton as bottom endof the market. It can be quite cheap, but reviews call it under powered, and the motor slows on a full width cut. Because of my working temperatures here, I dont want anything that will over heat and trip the thermal overload. I'd have to buy a walk in freezer to cool it back down again.

its either makita or jet, still waiting on the prices delivered.

The metabo was going cheap yesterday at ffx - sub £400 (one day deal unfortunately), they have makita 'deals' today - but I understand you may need it shipped etc.

Yeah, I need it shipped (its just a bit heavier than my filght baggage allowance), and axminster is the best shipper I can find (their courier TNT not withstanding) I suspect it will be the jet

Have you contacted shipping agents for quotes to transport a thicknesser to Cyprus port-only? There would be taxes and handling fees to consider, but would mean you're not tied to just one supplier. You could then potentially buy a good used machine from auction if you wanted?

When i tried to buy my bandsaw, I got shipping quotes ranging from £350 (on a £400 machine) right down to being laughed out the shop (yandles manager, he thought it was hysterical).

Axminster got it to my door for £90 on a £600 machine with no fuss at all on their part, just a problem with TNT trying to deliver it to the wrong country.

And i dare not buy a "good condition used" because any part needed would entail more shipping and endless waiting. At least buying a new machine i only have to worry about adjustments.
So far, i have not found a better supplier than axminster.

None of these lunch box style planers have induction motors to my knowledge. They are all varying degrees of ear bleeding loud.

The makita is a quiet 85 db. the de walt is a terrifying 108db.
that difference surprises me. I bet one of these figures is measured in a different way. I can't see how a universal motored planer can possibly be as low as 85...

makita is well respected, and they constantly refer to the noise level as a selling point. I'm hoping they are good people.
