I was given this wood yesterday and wondered if anyone here had any thoughts as to what it might be.

Not particularly relevant but it is about 10" square and was about a yard long but my son helped me cut it down to manageable (for me as it is very heavy) pieces.

Then I split some down and ran it through the thickneser. In the photo below the piece on the right has been given a coat of linseed oil.

Thanks

It's very heavy, and fairly hard. That said it seems to cut better on the scrollsaw than it does on the bandsaw.

Untreated it is quite green and someone suggested greenheart (never heard of that).

As to provenance, consensus is that it may be from a boat and the presence of some small barnacles in a hole in the wood supports that.

Looking at the timber I'm inclined to agree about it possible having been a groyne/wave breaker.

The chap found three of these in the back of a shed at the house he has just moved into, they are all around 4' tall and 10" square and do indeed look as though they have been well weathered as you can see in the bottom piece in the picture.
