My infill collection has been suffering a bit lately awaiting the marvellous jointer Richards has made for me and the rasp to finish off that and the Scottish Infill Smoother so they were all feeling a bit lonely...

One cold night while scanning FleaBay I espied this beauty....

I could tell from the description that this was a very cared-for tool...the owner described it perfectly...and since he had been using it for flattening and thicknessing guitar bodies...it was obviously a user!

It was up for a starting price of £70 and so I just put a starting bid on it and forgot about it thinking I would be pipped at the post by a rather larger amount. Imagine my joy when I won it with the only bid!!!

Now this may have been because of the mouth which was described as wide...but the iron in it is not the thickest in the block and years ago may have been a replacement so a rosewood (yes rosewood) shim was used to bring it forward. As I intend to use a thicker iron anyway...this was just what I needed and no problem at all.

The plane was obviously a casting...which was user filled in mahogany...

I feel really bad about replacing the iron...I may not even bother as it is a beautiful old Kangaroo from one of my favourite of the Sorby clan...

....and after all....he's a beautiful little shaver...

And before you say it Prof...a new cabinet is in the future!!!

Jim

PS....I also needed an excuse for trying out my new camera...the first time I have ever not used an SLR...and I am very impressed with the new P510...what a beauty that camera is and it fits in my pocket...(just!)

Ooo you old collector! Getting quite worried with your recent spending habits Jim but I have a theory..regarding the oft mentioned retirement.

Jim!

You have to leave some in the wild to maintain the breeding stock!

Nice plane mate.

Pete

How thick is the iron Jim? Less than 3/16? It's hard to tell from the photos. Also what pitch is it? It looks low (45ish) but then again, it's hard to tell.

Looks like a novel way to make a lever screw too. These planes don't half bring out the inventive steaks in folks.
