Been practising on bits of scrap plus the offcut from a softwood gatepost. The first, from the bad end of a walnut log I was debating whether to turn or not. Had a bit of fun with it might even be considered wabi sabi or possibly a bit more kemosabi :).

complete with little willow worm, that hole goes all the way through to the top "eye" of teh face opposite. All of the wood incursions are from woodworm, not an errant chainsaw.

The little one was my first attempt at an apple.

I have no artistic talent but it seems to me a slight over emphasis of the apple shape looks more "appley" sort of a three dimensional cartoon.

Nice, I like the leaves, how did you make them?

a few pics to illustrate. very easy to do, only takes a few minutes. recommend you do a batch from any dark wood. I am using greenheart but walnut would work well, Once you have a few you will find different apples will need different shaped stalks.

Cut a small bit of wood, ideally tapered on one side

P1020191.JPG

Mount it in a 3 jaw chuck, note that the straight side rests on one jaw and the sides of the taper are gripped by the other two jaws.

turn the spindle with bit of the taper wing as a cove.

you are now left with something like this.

now use grinder coarse wheel to shape

you are now left with something like this.

Too thick so more grinding

end up with something like this. You will get to make them how you prefer.

I really like the apple with the willow worm, that is excellent. I have always liked turning with inclusions, whether it be bark, (large) worm holes, spalting (ok, so not exactly an inclusion), it is making something extra special & unique from what many would call scrap wood.

Thanks to all for your kind comments. I have deviated somewhat from my intention of making huge bowls :) Today I turned a little thing about 10mm diameter as part for a watering system I am making for the greenhouse.
