Aluminium Plane?

I found this while browsing Ebay

Why would anyone make a plane out of aluminium? I can only see disadvantages ie. light weight, soft etc.

Anyone seen one of these before?

John,
Never seen one, or heard of one for that matter. Blood and Gore has nothing on it. The aluminium things Stanley made were universally panned and only a collector could love them. This plane is probably so horrible to use that it was put away and forgotten. I expect any others were simply thrown away. so this one is probably as rare as rocking horse etc.
