European legislation dictates that simulated pedestrian head impact test standards are passed. This requires a pedestrian head impact zone under a car bonnet - this allows the impact energy to be absorbed through deformation of the bonnet. Any solid objects such as the top of the engine must be below this zone.
If this energy absorption zone cannot be created due to package/styling constraints, technology such as a deployable bonnet is required.
