Inconspicuous ad in today's ScotAds "tool sale, Bridge of Don" with a phone number. Rang the number and the lady who replied said it was her Grandad having a clear out of joiner's tools, as he had to move house. So had to go and have a look. In a well-locked garage, "grandad" (about my age :( :( :( :( :( ) had an enormous selection of tools; every size of Disston saw, every size from 3 to 7 Stanley/Record planes plus a couple of unrecognised brands, a Record 50, Record 143 (mine, now :D ) chisels, cooper's tools, archimedan drills, a few engineering tools, tools neither of us was sure about, acetylene lamps, etc, etc etc. Apparently, the real gems had been picked out by a local dealer earlier in the day, but for anyone starting out on the slippery hand tool slope, it was probably there. He has to be out of the garage tonight, so no idea what will happen after that. Unfortunately, I'd not got my camera.
He admitted to being someone who couldn't pass up an interesting tool if it was the right price - don't we all know that feeling? Ended up offering him £20 for a job lot of things I sort-of needed, against his suggestion of £15.

And in the way of small worlds, he had been apprenticed to our next-door-neighbour's brother some 50 years ago.

If I lived nearby, it sounds perfect. Sadly it's a bit of a trek for me.

Love it! Particularly you giving him £20 for the £15 asking price.

Scholar and gentleman sir! You obviously both got a very happy deal and that's what it's all about.

In the stuff from the garage there were two nondescript 1/2" gouges, in and out-cannel and fairly rusty. To clean them up with citric acid needed a tall, thin glass container, so as not to use too much acid. After asking SWMBO if there was any such container around, she supplied the one shown below. Beat that for quality and cooperation!
Actually, the cut glass vase needed an acid bath to remove the discoloration from the base, so it was a "win-win situation" :D And as a Black Country girl, SMBO knows her cut glass, and reckons it wasn't a particularly good example
