Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on the right type of air nailer to use for fencing - typically nailing featherboards to arris rails. I'm not in the market for a cordless gas nailer like a Paslode but rather one that runs off a compressor. What do most people use for this type of job and can anyone recommend a cheap option for me?

Thanks in advance!

Coil roofing nailer would be my choice. Depending on the model you can use up to 3.5 inch nails. But the most popular will be up to 50mm nails. I think axminster sell one.

Cheers Carl. I was looking on the Axi site but couldn't find one. Can anyone recommend a model of this type of nailer costing less than a £100?

Thanks Carl

A lot of the coil nailers returned by that search seem to be in the states. Would a US spec nailer work ok over here? I mean would the couplings, nails etc be compatible?

Strange as i copied the uk only bit. Anyway i have 3 porter cable nail guns which came with usa fittings and i just bought the uk versions and swapped them on the guns. ;)

Shouldn't have to go for one from the states the carriage could kill the bargain it might seem. Don't worry about couplings there's quite a few types over here. An 1/8 bsp fitting is standard on most air tools, you just choose what type of quick coupling you want to standardize on and can get locally and charge that part if necessary. I've gone with PCl and buy my gun fittings from Machine Mart. Use a bit of ptfe tape where the fitting screws into the gun. Unless you go for something exotic nails shouldn't be a problem. I've a Bostitch coil nailer, takes 50mm nails and cost about £50 from Ebay. Proper roofing nailers use nails with larger heads than normal coil nailers which is what you need, used by lots of small firms that make fence panels etc.

If its just for a one off job have you considered a palm nailer for around £25.00,it will use almost any size nails that you want, runs from a compressor. Ok it wont do rapid fire like the more expensive alternatives but it will do the job and do it well.

I hadn't considered a palm nailer to be honest. Do they take a magazine or do they need refilling after each nail?

They take one nail at a time which you drop in and it's held by a magnet.
