my ongoing workshop build gives me the opportunity to have a static mitre station
do i need one (i think so)....do i want one...most definitely

my query is about the fence, I want a fence so i can fit stop blocks ruler etc
should I offset this back a few mm in case I have a bowed timber to cut?
or do I make it moveable on t tracks (seems like a lot of expense and hassle)?
I cant see why it needs to be flush with my mitre saw fence
it will be long enough to take a 3.6m length either side of saw

any thoughts please

Steve

p.s. I thought I had asked before but can't remember

The short answer is that you can do whatever you want :)

Typically the fence are flush so that you can cut max width, and so there is even support all along.

If you have bowed timber, there's no difference between having a fence that's a few mm back or having a fence that's flush - you're still not going for a 90 degree cut until it's no longer bowed

This was my effort from a few years ago

By putting the length stop in the bottom it becomes alot more useful imho

I dabbled over the idea of a long fence and discarded the idea. If you were to be cutting joints by hand the chances are your try square would only be 9 inchs. Having it fully supported and having length stops made it worth the effort. Since making it I've never had to chop it about or alter it ;)

I had one of sorts that i cobbled together but didn't really get on with it. I am currently doing a workshop refurb and i'm not sure whether i will bother putting one in again. Still deciding.

thats look like a nice setup Coley
something for me to consider
I know what has been said about bowed timber and straight cuts
but would prefer the timber tight to saw fence so i get no nasty surprises
and if it is really bad i could just a backing board for the odd cut

Love the leveling platform Coley - think I might half inch that :D
Cheers Matt, yeah crack on ;) I'd forgot about that bit to be honest. This use to be my site saw. The mdf was there to be able to mount it quickly to the telescopic table. I thought it best to keep the option of using it for big site work, hence the reason for making it easily removable.

Probably taken it out on site twice in ten years  10 inch version copes with most things.

I always set my extended fences a few mm back from the mitre saw fences, as said better incase the timber you are cutting is bent.
