Hello,

I have saved some woodworking allocated money and I would like to buy my first specialty plane.

I would like to buy Veritas router plane (as the vintage Stanleys and Records cost almost as much as a new Veritas).
Can you please tell me what blades are useful to have for this plane? 1/2 inch flat and pointed comes with the package. I am considering buying 1/4 inch as well. Do I need flat or pointed or both?

Thank you.

I cannot say when I last used the pointed blade ... uuuh .. yes .. never!

1/2", 3/16", 1/4", 6mm, and 1/8" are the ones I use.

Get the fence. You will find a use for it.

I also made a scraper blade out of a hex key. Good for shorter grooves/mortices/stopped dados ...

Thank you very much Derek. I could buy a fence, but the first thing that came to mind was that I could use a router plane with a fence as a plough plane. Then I have found your answer on another forum, that this setup is not efficient.

What else can I use the fence for?

I have an old wooden plough plane where wooden parts are broken, but I can take metal parts and iron and create a new one. If I fail to do that, I would need to save up for Veritas small plough plane.

A router plane is inefficient - compared with a plough plane. However, the router plane can do stopped grooves and stopped rebates. The fence aids in alignment.

Left full (to avoid leaving a vulnerable dovetailed end) ...

How about a curved and bowed stretcher!! Here, using the inlay cutter to score the lines ..

Curved, so the fence is reversed for this ...
