Hi there, I'm soundproofing a new workshop at the moment and just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether acoustic mineral wool is worth the price premium over the common or garden stuff? Plan at the moment is to put 50mm mineral wool between battens on the (brick) walls with fermacell on top. Thanks, Marcus.

Only if used as part of a full system Including the brackets to isolate the walls and give a dead space then the proper Plasterboard etc etc

If you can, avoid putting board over the mineral wool (on the inside of the workshop). It is much more sound absorbent that way, as any facing reflects rather than absorbs the sound.

If you must have facing, and it's hard not to, try to leave some large areas uncovered, for example up in the roof. Chicken mesh would keep it all in place.

They might need hoovering down gently, from time to time, but they'll soak up far more sound energy per sq. m. than any board will, and at useful frequencies (those made by routers and other machines).

HTH, E.
