Acme thread?

Hi all
I'm looking at making my own vice and so far what i've read the usual zinc plated all thread just isn't man enough for the job. I've read something about Acme threaded rod but can't seem to find any uk suppliers so any advise on pointing me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

You might be better off buying a complete vice screw depending on what you want to do.

Hi Matt good to see you back on the forum
The tail vices on our benches have Acme threads but the Veritas one is probably going to last longer http://www.brimarc.com/products/Veritas ... 788427.htm this is the one we supplied to one of our current students for his recent book press build.

I'm not convinced that an Acme thread is necessary for woodworking, especially when the screw is metal. I've made two metal vice screws using a vee / Whitworth form and I've had no problems. In fact there are plenty of vintage wooden screws using a vee form that have survived ok
