I would just like to say thank you to all the members who post on here. I only recently took up the hobby having had no previous experience or training but have learned so much from this site that I am now really beginning to enjoy it as I am beginning to see some returns on my efforts. I am working on a saw sharpening vice and other jigs and bits, doing things that a year ago I would not have even contemplated attempting. I can now really sharpen chisels and planes, cut various joints and understand a little about wood grain. I am still often overwhelmed by how much I don't know but the learning curve is beginning to get a little less steep.
I am daily reminded of just how much skill and talent is out there and am often in awe of the work you all produce. I hope one day I can produce something half as good, ( I should live so long! :D ) Once again thanks to all on here for giving so much.

We all have to learn at some point, at the beginning is usually a safe place to start. :D The important factor is to enjoy it. It will be come frustrating at times, particularly as you start to gain more experience. The expectation can become one of expecting to achieve high results when in fact it may be a new technique or skill you are attempting. When this happens, take a step back, ponder and if that doesn't work, there is always someone on here who has either been through it or is a highly adept practitioner.

Good luck and enjoy

David

Although I haven't contributed to your particular questions Sam, I do try to give whatever advice I can to anyone who needs it.

I suspect that very few of us have done anything in woodwork since we were at school so to be able to hang out in somewhere like UK Workshop is brilliant. I haven't been here long but I have been woodworking and scroll sawing for a number of years. Most of what I know I've had to find out for myself so it's brilliant to now be able to ask advice from other people on here. There's a good bet that whatever you need to know, someone would have already been there and will point you in the right direction.

I regularly visit three or four vastly different subject forums and I have to say that UK Workshop is the friendliest and most helpful one I frequent. I don't know whether people who deal with wood and build things have a different attitude to life but the people I've met on here have all been very friendly and will help out with any query that I've had.

I would echo what David said. We all have to learn, for some it was years ago, for most od us it was somewhat more recently and an ongoing process :)
