The last time we visited Cragside, Northumbria, not far from you, we were quite late and the last people going round the place. I asked the guide in the dining room if it waas possible to see that capstain table in action? He said not possible unfortunately, but he let me cross the barrier and have a close look. SWMBO and our friends wanderd off and as I was leaving the room the guide stopped me and said that as there was nobody else there to come and see. He showed me how it worked and from that day I have wanted to make one entirely from wood, gearing and all. That table was taken from a design of c.1835 by Robert Jupe and I think it is even better than the one in the video above. The leaves are separate and the table can be made up to 3 sizes, not just 2 and if I remember correctly it seats between 8 and 16 people

I have seen a few videos a few times on these tables, and it still leaves me speechless when I watch. I must look up the original designs- amazing that it was the best part of 200 years ago.

Mr Fletcher acknowledges his debt to Jupe in his videos. Interestingly there are other circular expanding designs on YouTube too, including a NY firm who male repro Jupe tables, and more interestingly still, several other designs.

You can see why Fletcher has the market though - really nice engineering. The "Moscow" table is apparently 3m diameter - the biggest they've made so far. I wonder how many it seats, and who bought it! Fletcher says in one video that they've made them in 'stone', and were asked to consider the mechanism for a helicopter landing pad.
Move over Dr. No - you've been outclassed!

I love Cragside, by the way. I can't quite imagine, however, living with a wild bees' nest above the back door.

I you look at the Fletcher web site then I suppose if you can get a tax rebate (?) to buy one of the boats he shows his tables on then it's the RR principle of if you ask how many it does to the gallon you can't afford it anyway?

Last September we had a week in Calvi, Corsica. The port ther had a BIG motor yacht arrive and park up. The following day another, about 25/30% bigger arrived and parked up beside it, then a few daze later one that doubled both parked next to them and that is the sort of thing that would have had one of those tables as a coffee table on it!. I am willing to bet that the first one was right piss-ed off that the others made his likkle willie look so small

The big jobbie was flying a Maltese flag. I hadn't realised that they had that much cash on the island?
