The green and wetter end of the M4.
Last year I delved into a pile of (what we think was) grey poplar. Turns out that its a joy to turn but splits cracks and warps like nobody's business, so not really worth the shelf space.
anyway, for one of the test pieces I turned a simple bowl, which then moved about the workshop holding various things till I had a spring clean.
At the time the swallows nesting on my shed had just fledged and in the process their nest took a tumble and disintegrated. Being the kind soul I am I sawed the aforementioned bowl in half and whacked a couple of screws through the sides, Voila! instant prefab housing for birds, and fixed to the shed next to the lamp on which the swallows had nested.
Alas the swallows did not return :( but the prefab has recently been occupied by some locals - a pair of Warblers (garden variety I think) and they have set up home :D 8)

So if you were wondering what to do with that pile of substandard bowls, cut 'em in half and call 'em birds nests
Not a very good pic but you get the idea...

Nice one Nev, though I seriously doubt your birds are Warblers of any variety, none of them would nest inside a building or a container, much more likely to be Spotted Flycatchers, they have a similar appearance in a loose way to a Garden Warbler, but do indeed favour such locations to nest.

 it has also just occured to me that one could make similar use of a full bowl too. a couple of opposing mounting holes through the rim towards the base and an appropriate *** (or similar nesting type) sized hole in the side and maybe a perch = one luxury pad for birds :) A craft fair seller if ever i saw one
