I am looking for some African Paduak wood. I live in the south and i know there is an exotic wood place in Tonbridge Kent. I am quite happy with offcuts 3/4 to 1in thick about 15 in long.
Does anyone know of other wood suppliers in the south.
Cheers

The place in Tonbridge is excellent. But I am a regular. You could also try Guildford Exotic Timbers which is based at Loseley Park on the south side of Guildford. I have had quite a bit of stuff from them too. No idea what current stocks either place has. The "south" is quite a wide area!

I expect that at present, an outfit which delivers is more use than anywhere "local".

You could try these people in Staffordshire - they list some bigger bits of paduak but might have an offcut.

Padauk is a lovely wood, but if you havent used it before, take a few extra PPE precautions. The bright orange dust is a known irritant and can make your skin itch like crazy if you are "sensitive" to that kind of thing.
Use a mask, and extraction, and sweep up straight after using.

The lid and corners of this box are padauk.

Ah yes I have been there a few times but never heard of them as Guildford Exotic Timbers  just Surrey Timber. They have a some good timber there. I will look on line. I usually travel past Tonbridge every other week to my Sons house but that is on hold at the moment. You definitely need a torch in that place lol.

Have seen these online but not sure how the wood will travel, as in will it get split or broken. Will look again though.

Your right I forgot when I first started on it, it is a very dusty wood. Took the extract hood off the lathe and used that. I have a large extract which sucked all the fine dust away. The wood looks amazing when oiled up!

Thanks for the replies peeps

Sounds OK too.

Just for general interest, It's used for the tuned keys on wooden idiophones (marimba, xylophone, balofon) and can be sized and tuned to specific pitches. Mostly student and school models, top end ones use rosewood, even that comes in grades. If padauk is £, rosewood runs from ££ to £££££ on a marimba.
