Hi all,
I've been having trouble finding a good, yet still cheap 9'' cabinetmaker's vise for my workbench (hasn't been built yet). I've heard the Record's are good but Irwin's don't get a good review these days and have jaw-dropping price tags. I tried looking on the 'bay but no one is selling vises where I live and sellers in the UK only do local pickups for their vises...

These are about the most reasonably priced ones I've come across, but I'd really like to keep the cost under €90.

I would've gone with a more traditional vise (something like http://www.fine-tools.com/spindel.htm) if it weren't for the difficulties I think I might encounter fitting one... Is it hard to fit a traditional vise?

what do you think about this axminster "carpenter's" vise:

a reviewer said axminster's other vise had some problems so i'm rather skeptic about this one.

I've got one of those Axminster quick release vices 9", and I would recommend them.
Look at the reviews.
It's solid as a rock, and quite weighty at around 18 kgs.
I fitted the vice to the bench with 4 x m10 coach bolts, which is very easy to do.

If you're after a record style vice at a good price check this out. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251266804645?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
Its from Matthew @ workshopheaven so will be good value and very good quality. I have just ordered one myself.

Have you had a chance to use it yet? Does it look like it will last long? I just wanna buy a good, solid vise and not worry about it forever.

Sam

Only ordered it today but when it comes I will report back. With it being from Matthew I really cant see it being bad, he wouldn't sell it if he wouldn't use it himself.

hmm... Nevermind, apparently ebay's stupid system doesn't allow international buyers to buy item's that are listed as UK delivery only, when in fact the WSH actually says vise can be delivered overseas...

Yes, I know, but they don't seem to sell the vice on their own website...

Contact matthew if that's the vice you want, im sure he would sort it out for you. They are after all the same shop!! It would surprise me if they let something like ebay restrictions get in the way. Im also sure i saw a thread where he had sold something to someone in Canada, so I'm sure they ship abroad ....

We have 3 of these vices in the workshop and they have performed very well for our general joinery. Great price too.

Do they have "tapered" jaws like the Record ones do?

An update on the vice from WSH. I have fitted it today and what a fantastic vice for the money! In answer to your question yes the jaws are tapered. I've temporarily lined the jaws with some 18mm MDF and when its tightened (not really really tight) the work piece will not move an inch even after beating with a mallet (just to test). The vice is so good I may buy another one while he has them.
If its for a new bench I would advice fitting it with the bench upside down as its really heavy to hold and then mark at the same time - the wife said it was too heavy for her to hold...... wimp!!!

Someone on here gave me the tip to clamp a piece of wood in the vice the same height as your bench. You can then use the piece of wood to prop the vice at the right height under your bench while you mark the positions of the holes. A great tip that saved my back.

Wish I'd thought of that..... my arms are killing this morning. (hammer)
