Got adventurous and started to prepare timber from logs, the first time for me.

I was given three ash logs two years ago from a garden two doors away.

So I made up a kind of trestle and screwed the first log in position.

Took of a thin slice to get the feel of the action.

The timber looked nice and workable to me.

So finished up cutting the log.

I do confess that the cuts are not straight and even thickness. The log quite honestly was as much as I could handle, so will not be going in depth for loggin and preparing again in the future apart from using up the other two logs.

Any idea what the moisture level of the inner wood is John ?
Regardless, don't rush trying to use it until you have had it in stick for a while, I've had great success in making propellers out of my local logs.

I have no intention of using timber before next May. It will have to be cut to small pieces anyway and then hand planed.etc.
No equipment to measure moisture, perhaps I could take a piece with me next year to a wood show and someone could do a measure for me.

I have a cheap and chearful moisture metre if you want to borrow it. just pop it back in the post when done. No great hurry, you can do a measure now and one in May if you want to then send it back!
