I'm new to the wonders of wood and have been attempting to join three beams. I found this picture online that looked ideal, but for the life of me I can't get it to work or find plans that show me how.

i found this pic on online. Says it was easy to cut but can't find anything similar anywhere on the net. Does someone have any idea how this would work? I would need a diagram if you do.

Mucho Gracias :D

this is my second attempt. i think i've worked it out, however i wanted the joint to be a little more flush than this. ideally everything would line up or at the least, my horizontal beams would be level.

does anyone know or have any 3 way joints that could work for this?

I think I've seen it work somewhere but can't quite put my finger on it. Those wooden puzzles I think had one similar.

Draw it out on the drawing board. Doesn't look particularly difficult - certainly not a "puzzle"!

looks to me like the cut in face A of vertical beam B/A needs to be further down to allow for beam E/F to sit flush with C/D - then fiddle the rest to suit. Pretty straightforward.

Antony Gormley has been having a go but I bet he used a few nails

I'd suggest looking at mortice and tenon joinery. You'll end up with something easier to understand and stronger IMO. :)

thanks for the nuggets of advice everyone. and a nice call on the three piece burr nev.

the join is for a teahouse/dollhouse at 1:12 scale. i'm doing a timber frame structure inspired by traditional japanese design. join strength can be compromised a fair bit due to its scale and design. i'm still experimenting with joinery that functions where i need it to. this 3 way lap joint has been particularly puzzling but nonetheless enjoyable.

the 'beams' in this instance are 21x21mm pine stripwood. i'll be making the finished article in oak after i've mastered this prototype.
