Am I right in thinking that if a machine is 3 phase it cant be used in a domestic wiring setting ? or can it be used with a transformer ?

Not a transformer but sometime with inverter but some one else knows a lot more about that than me!

Broken link Tony

If the machine is 3 phase 230-250v then you need a simple inverter. If the machine is 410-430v then you need a larger converter, which one will depend on the machines requirements but both inverters and converters can run off domestic supplies. In some cases the motor can be rewired to only need an inverter or even just a single phase domestic supply. Once the link works you will have all the info you need.

If after reading my paper on the subject, you might find this diagram useful in selecting the way ahead for your three phase machinery.
