strange question:
Whats the finished size of whatever is sold as 2 X 1?

I never normally buy PAR but in March I was in Penzance, whilst there, I did a rush job for a friend, so had to buy the wood from a builders supply.

Next week I am going down again and need to tidy up the previous job, so plan to take wood with me.
I have wood ready to rip & plane.

It depends on the supplier. That would come out as 45 x 20 from mine. I have seen it 19mm thick from elsewhere.

I'm guessing your friend either isn't very handy with a tape measure, or isn't very handy with a 'phone! :)

cheers! sounds about right to me.

The "friend" is actually my ex sister in law.
She had just moved into a new (to her) house.
Her tool kit comprised of one pozi screwdriver.

I decided I would get a better/quicker answer from here than from her.
She is far from dim (although she did once marry my dolt of a brother  ) it's just there are folks whose abilities are way over in another direction.

Sadly it varies from 45 x 22 to 43 x 18 with just about every permutation in between, depending on where it is from.

Would seem to be par for the course. (par - see what I did there? :D )

I believe the normal allowance is 1/4” on each dimension for machining. So the minimum you would be expected to accept is 3/4”by 1 3/4”

Whose normal?

All of the answers given have been correct. It depends entirely on the settings in the mill used by the supplier, and they're all different. As I said, mine are 20 x 45, which amounts to 5mm off the metric equivalent of the imperial measurements. In fact, to be pedantic, yours is the only answer which is completely wrong, because timber is sold by the metric rather than imperial system.

I have planed them up to around 45 x 20 ish.
Was expecting slightly different answers (with wood, 1mm here or there is nothing amongst friends) but not a punch up

............. Planed finish was not very good, what sharpening technique should I use :)

But it could have been the width of the mouth on your plane or the position of the cap iron
