Look at the threads. If the tops and bottoms are radiused (rounded off) they are BSW if they are straight 60 degree point or flat topped they might be UNC.

Sorry. I should have said I don't have a thread (or a lathe for that matter) with this thread. I need to make a spindle to hold a 'standard' woodturning chuck, and need to know what threadform such chucks use. Only info I can find is the thread size and pitch. Oh, and I don't have a chuck yet either. .
Thanks for the help.

Adam.

Also to add a little, ( I answered a bit late yesterday)
If it were BSF there would be 10 threads per inch
Both BSW and UNC would use 8 threads per inch
ALL for 1 inch diametre.

My old Jet lathe with a 1" x 8tpi spindle uses a UNC thread. I believe UNC to be the most common thread type for 1" x 8tpi wood lathe spindles as any 1" x 8tpi chuck I've tried on it (and I've tried quite a few different ones!) fit just fine :)

+1 for UNC i.e. 60 degree threadform rather than Whitworth 55 degree.

I use a 1" UNC Tap to cut threads for wooden faceplates and it works just fine for my Jet headstock.
