    Buying a Tracksaw

The Festool doesn’t have a specific “scoring” facility but it is so quick to set the saw to 2mm depth of cut that it doesn’t need it. Usually the scoring cut is made by running the saw backwards down the track. The budget saws aren’t as easy to set to precise depth so it might not be so...

I blame YouTube, how many more Americanisms are we going to have to suffer ?

It’s not just U.K. vs US... go to Glasgow if you’re “lookin for a lumber”.

    One-jab efficacy questions

The problem with not vaccinating “the young” is that you create a population pool in which the virus can circulate and mutate. A population pool that is highly socially active too. Given that the immunity induced by the vaccine is transient, even after two shots it may only last a year or so, we...

    One-jab efficacy questions

“All viruses mutate” but some mutate much more rapidly than others. Chicken pox, measles and mumps mutate much more slowly than flu or coronaviruses and are well controlled by vaccination programs. Coronavirus appears to be much more infectious than flu, given that it has continued to spread...

    What Oil stone to get?

I use a “rag-in-a-can” oiler, essentially a rolled up rag in a tin can, saturated with 3-in-one oil (see Paul Sellers on YouTube for how to make one). A quick swipe over a plane sole or saw blade reduces friction and keeps rust at bay. Leaves no residue on the wood and doesn’t have any impact on...

Challenge - 18th century transport box design and materials?

I’ve just watched an episode of “The woodwrights shop 2021-The tiny tool kit”, apologies if it’s been suggested before in the thread (I haven’t read every post). Roy Underhill and Chris Schwarz talk about making a packing box. The material is more like 1/2” as it is nailed together, as a period...

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

Sadly not less red tape. Border/ customs checks on every consignment going between U.K. and EU. A ream of paper for every single truck. Hundreds of new customs agents needed to try and keep all that straight. The EU has an Aviation Agency, Medicines Agency, Chemicals Agency etc that took care of...

    9 degree router bits

Wealden do a series of bevel cutters that might fit the bill. They can be used for multi-sided boxes, coopered lids etc. Sorry, too quick on the trigger with my first post

    Help my bandsaw has died!

There is definitely no brake. when the saw was running it would take a lot longer than 10s to come to a stop. If I can get the motor off I'll take photos of the dismantling and post them here. It might take me a while to get round to it so don't hold your breath. If it needs a new motor I don't...

    Help my bandsaw has died!

Other than where the cable enters the motor there are no "bulges". As you can see in photo 4, there is a plate screwed on to a small bulge on the end of the motor. No idea whether that might house a capacitor or not but it looks too small compared with the capacitors I've seen on more modern...

Axminster are doing a the Leigh R9 which works in the same sort of way but, being Leigh it is a lot more expensive at nearly £180.

    Help my bandsaw has died!

Hi guys, it's been a few days since I started this thread and I've only just got back into my workshop today. Bob, you were spot-on, without a blade installed the motor will run if I spin the bottom wheel (in either direction). I have taken a few photos of the saw, the motor, motor plate and...

    Help my bandsaw has died!

Bob, The electricity to the workshop (garage) is a straight connection via armoured cable to an isolator switch in the garage. From there the sockets are just daisy chained (something else I need to sort out). The bandsaw was the only thing running at the time, even the lights were off.

    Help my bandsaw has died!

Thanks for the replies guys (especially Bob). Sorry I've not been on-line for a couple of days...busy with other things. I did try spinning the bottom wheel with the power on and nothing happened. I did have the blade on though, so I'll take it off and follow your advice and report back. I'll...

    Help my bandsaw has died!

Yes it turns freely. The motor is direct drive attached to the bottom wheel so a direct motor swap may be difficult.

    Help my bandsaw has died!

My old bandsaw has packed in. It is an old cast iron Wilmac 12" bench top model. I was re-sawing some fairly wet oak and it bogged down, blew the fuse and now it won't run. The motor hums but doesn't turn (1/2 hp single phase). There was no burning smell, sparks, flames or anything. I'm hoping...

    router question please

Before I bought a Trend T11, which has through-the-table height winding. I used a set of Woodrat plunge bars (http://www.woodrat.com/plungebars.html). Sorry, I can't remember how to embed links. The plunge bars let you adjust the bit height one handed...admitedly not as good as a router raizer...

    Table or Mitre saw

An alternative to a commercial "track" for your hand held circular saw is to make your own. Google for "sawboard" and you should get what you need. You can make one that will guide the saw on one side and a router on the other, to "joint" the cut edge. These are good for sheet material, like...

    Planer/thicknesser.

Hi Geoff, planing 3/4" stock down to 1/4" sounds like a huge waste of potentially expensive material. It sounds to me like you also need some sort of re-saw capacity. A band saw that will re-saw 8" wide boards would probably eat up your budget but I reckon that as an alternative to planing away...
