How many active turners remain in UKWorkshop ?

Yes, but its much more general than the bowls and forms when I first got the lathe! Last few things have been tiller handles for some canal boats and, current project, a somewhat complicated wine cooler stand (well I'm making it complicated anyway!).

Cutting tongue and grooves on a large scale.

I'm struggling to understand how an additional 50 % of materials (half board overlap) can't be more expensive than basic machined product ie 19mm shiplap or t&g.

    Ash vessel

really inspiring, for all the reasons already posted. having just completed the workshop rebuild my lathe is coming out of storage :)

    convert my shed

generally tools make things easier rather than being needed - most construction work can be done with a claw hammer and a good hand saw plus some sort of drill. the key elements you are going to have to address are the addition of insulation and an appropriate vapour barrier to the floor...

Planning permission for a wendy house??

I would suggest that the planning permission thread (sticky) in the projects forum will apply equally to a Wendy house as it does a workshop.

    a chuck question

damn - I forgot about the wood lathe chuck sitting right next to us whilst considering the options! the inside corners of the jaws of that chuck should be about right for the diameter involved and the throat behind them is certainly large enough. then again he has a metal lathe option too........

recommend a finish for a whitewood bench please?

excellent summary Douglas - thanks. I'm only building the bench so I can invite you round for tea - your benches, and you have probably built another by now, make everything else I see look second class; including the LN ones! (actually I'm building a new workshop for the tea but thought I...

recommend a finish for a whitewood bench please?

Indeed - I briefly considered extensive use of sanding sealer for this reason. Quick trials on some scrap have me favouring the ultra hard varnish option. The finish should be going on next week now

Absolute beginner, looking to refit a sail boat interior

I have to agree that it is extremely unlikely to appeal to everyone - hence the suggestion to retain the originals! I'm still slightly confused as to whether the intention is to create accents or a refit. Hardwood in the thickness appropriate to the doors wouldn't be my recommendation either -...

Absolute beginner, looking to refit a sail boat interior

I was thinking westerly or moody from your description... To get a cap idea of how things might look you can either use photos and photoshop or print a few pages of your preferences veneer and stick them over the doors with double sided tape. If you do go ahead I would recommend retaining the...

Absolute beginner, looking to refit a sail boat interior

Welcome to the forum - some difficult questions to answer given the scope; so perhaps a few pointers may help you mention new doors, resurfacing and inlays; you may or may not mean all 3. 1. My guess is that the existing doors will be a teak or mahogany faced marine plywood construction (or...

recommend a finish for a whitewood bench please?

Thank you all for your responses, which sort of help but also leave me with the original question unanswered in my mind. Philip and Marcos's responses almost exactly represent my thinking in asking the question! I have BLO, Danish Oil and a Satin Varnish (Sadolin's Poly Ultra Hard) - I don't...

recommend a finish for a whitewood bench please?

having read a number of bench build projects recently I got persuaded to knock something up when Wicks heavily discounted a batch of 72"x3x2 planed. inevitably I then got carried away in construction and feel I should invest in the best possible finish to give it a chance to live a little...

Another small bandsaw advice request...Please :-)

Couple of points Cutting straight can be as much a function of set up and blade as it is bandsaw but, the deeper the cut in the more awkward (rip cuts in oak or eucalyptus as examples) the more you need the machine, the blade and the set up! I once got a small bench top model on a cleanse steal...

    Workshop Build

judging by the space in Steve's new workshop, and his machinery layout, your similar sized shop should accommodate it! certainly sounds exciting

    Small Workbench WIP

this doesn't sound like slow progress to me! good to see someone working to the space available rather than just wishing for more space =D>

    Size of table saw blade?

ah but if the missile parts don't fit it only fails once, and can always be blamed on someone else with wood you will be able to see the error for ever; or spend forever correcting it (hammer)

Manual for DeWalt 1370 Radial Arm Saw?

be interesting to know! like Higon I just use a simple table. The full split set up.is clearly more relevant to use for ripping, which I don't use it for as I have T'S and BS
