Belt sander grit for fast shaping?

Thank you for the info. I spurced at place that sold the belts for around £1 a piece, and i sttled on 40 and 60 grit belts, and then a couple of 16 and 24 grit for quick finish removal.

Belt sander grit for fast shaping?

Hello. I've used cheap aluminium-oxide sanding belts bought locally on my 533x75mm Bosch belt sander. The lowest grit they had was 60, which i have used exclusively. Now i'm looking to stock up on some zirconia belts, but since shipping is pretty steap, i want to buy in bulk (like 50 belts)...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Thank you for the suggestion :). Unfurtunately a lot of "specialized" tools are not avalible for private consumers here (Sweden and Denmark). You have to own a company to have access. There are of course big warehouses that sell tools, but they all pretty much sell the same. So sharpening...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

They want £20 in shipping, so i think i will try my local supplier's stone first. Sweden has a pretty proud history of dealing with wood, so i don't know why i didn't think of slate before, and being a natural stone, i guess i could be just as lucky with the local stone supplier, as with the one...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Now we are talking :) I found a local supplier that has 200x50x16mm slate honing stone for £7. Will definately give that a go.

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Not to draw this out (which discussions on sharpening often seems to do), but have any of you used a "slate wetstone". http://www.britishblades.com/forums/sho ... e-Wetstone Here in Scandinavia it was the de facto stone for axemen, and i might be able to track one down locally. Or here...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

If you could provide a link for an ekstra fine (hard) oil stone of that size, that will ship to Sweden, i would be most gratefull. Budget is a major consideration :)

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Thank you for the heads up. I do sometimes use a little cheap Faithfull brand jig with the single wheel for my chisels, and i realize the narrower stone won't work 100% effeciently with this. That said - my wetstone wheel isn't a wide as my plane blades either, so you compensate by moving the...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

I get what you are saying, but with that philosophy, none of us should have more than 4 chisels, a handsaw, a hand brace with a couple of bits, a square, some clamps and a Stanley no. 4. I "feel" the difference between an allright sharpened tool, and a very sharp tool. Like a brand new tablesaw...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Thank you all :). I have a diamond dresser, but the thing is, as said before, that the wheel turns very slowly on the wetgrinder, so it's very hard to knock of high spots, without dipping in to the low spots. I will try to make a jig that i can attach to the tool rest, and put the diamond...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Thanks :). £90 plus £15 shipping for the translucent Arkansas is pretty hardcore, but as you said, still cheaper than £150 including shipping, and if it will last me a lifetime, i guess it's worth it. Regarding the wet grinder, it's stone is off center, so it goes up and down, which produces a...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Thanks carlb40 and Jacob. Have read through half of the post you mentioned carl, but so far the discussion is more about how flat is flat enough, not so much the tools used. I will read the rest. Jacob - can you provide a link to the stones you would recommend? Oil stones are expensive where i...

    Honing planes and chisels cheap?

Hello. Can anyone recommend some cheap-ish sharpening stones, and recommend which grits to get? I live in Sweden, so it has to be an online store, that ships to the rest of the EU. I have a 2 sided Norton India oil stone (think it's 250 and 600 grit), a second hand Scheppach Tiger 2000...

    My bandsaw spring recommendation.

Hi. Springs are often weak in the newer bandsaws. Maybe because manufacturers want to make sure that the spring yields before the frame does, which makes sense. However - sometimes when resawing thick stock, you want that ekstra tension, which should be within the frames abillities/tolerance...

Dust collection for the Wadkin AGS

Yes - in my case i does. The bigger the gap around the blade at the throat plate, the more difference it makes. A table saw cuts the wood with the teeth of the blades going down into the cabinet, so what i wanted was for the largest amount of air to pass by the blade under the table, to help...

Dust collection for the Wadkin AGS

So - a fellow from Lumberjocks.com asked me how i did the dust collection on my Wadkin AGS. So i made a short video for him. Since it took me a while to figure it out, i thought i might share it here as well, since others might be in the same situation. Misterfish was kind enough to help me out...

    Why use plywood?

Don't worry about your router table. For that kind of construction the plywood doesn't have to support itself, but is braced al over, and if you find the birch ply to be worth the money and pleasing to look at, you'll be fine. Plywood is very strong structually. Making higher cabinets with...

    Why use plywood?

Kirk - you don't count, because plywood is cheap as chips where you live :). If i have to order a sheet of quality birch in Sweden, it will cost just short of $200, where as a sheet of 3/4" MDF costs $40, If i could get plywood for $20, i would use it more often, since warpage wouldn't be a...

    Why use plywood?

Precisely. What i'm talking aqbout is what the americans call MDO plywood. They use it for street signs etc. But getting veneered MDF with a wood surface is not possible for the private consumer in Denmark and Sweden. You can get melamine covered MDF, which is very stable. I can get MDF to...
