    Careful, it's dangerous out there...

Although I think that our Scottish Government are no good, I am pleased they have restricted travel to the islands. they just need to pass a law that if you have come to your holiday home, or come up in a camper van etc, you will not be treated at a Scottish hospital if you get COVID-19 And will...

    Triumph Furniture gone bust

Sorry to hear that another well known company has gone under. There has been a lot of companies in the timber industry going under in the last year or so, big and small. That said there are jobs out there, I went under in January and had to lay off 5 people. All my staff all got jobs, some of...

    Working hours experiment

Treating your staff well is always a good thing to do. I always tried to do this with my business and had a very loyal and trust worthy workforce. In January when it all went wrong, and I had to tell them that they were losing their jobs, they all stayed until the bitter end and finished off...

    Sweeping up

At my former premises the landlords insurance guy told me I needed a DSEAR test on my equipment. I pointed out we already did LEV which is the requirement and then asked him how many woodworking shops he had inspected. He went very quiet and did not answer the question. Insurance inspectors...

    Sweeping up

When I had my own business I had an industrial vacuum for assisting with the cleaning up, but it is not the total solution. We also used a soft bristle brush as well, used for the big bits. Sweeping into an extactor system is a fire risk as if a piece of metal goes up the pipe there is a small...

    Blum movmento or Grass dynapro

I have fitted hundreds of Dynapro runners when I had my business and only had a couple of failures. Make sure you buy the 3d clips and not the 4d ones as the 3d clips are better.

What rubbish does your council charge for?

We are quite lucky in the Scottish Borders, the recycling centres allow cars in and also depending on what you are dumping will let an occasional van in, with no charge But what they did for traders was to introduce a permit which from memory is £900 per year, for a general one and £350.00 for...

    Spindle moulder knives

Why would you want to put your life at risk by cutting corners, if you lose or snap a cutter and it goes through you then you may have time to regret this choice. Would you fit cheap brake pads to your car? Buy proper ones I assume you have a decent spindle mould not a cheap hobby machine...

SIP 01344 PLANER THICKNESSER - calibrating thicknesser bed

Difficult to see on diagram But if the bottom will unscrew without taking the machine apart, I would turn the machine upside down, take off the bottom. Then wind the bed to its thinnest setting, you may have to turn each leg by hand if the gears won't grip Then change the gears, before you out...

    Saw technicians

A saw that has had the beam taken off will be a real pain in the backside to reset up. If you ever have to do it again put some reference marks on it to help you set it back up. What I would do is put the biggest blade the saw will take, wind it right up, and measure from the table slot at the...

He got a bit of wood stuck, and gave it a bang with another bit of wood. The chain snapped in 2 off the gear boxes and as there is no clearance in side them, they went through the casing. A new box is around a 1k plus fitting but the engineer managed to get the casings and rebuild them, it still...

    Saw technicians

I had an Scm saw and put that together from new. Yes it took me about a day to build and set it up, so slightly longer that your guy. But it was not difficult, just time consuming. If you do it yourself, you then know it is right and more importantly how to correct it if for some reason it needs...

    Saw technicians

What do you mean by tune them up. They are basic machines that a properly trained machinist should be able to set up with no problem A machine will go out of accuracy with use and keeping it accurate is part of normal maintainace which should be done. Have a go yourself instead of paying someone.

Tenoner Removing Top Head Nut Multico TM1

I had to shim my machine when I fitted the new ones, as for the cut having used both I would agree. But at least the new ones are a lot easier to change the knives. I don't really understand why Pollys took the old heads off his, it is not like he is running a business, but each to their own.

Tenoner Removing Top Head Nut Multico TM1

The blocks I bought from Whitehill 13 years ago for the TM3 I had then had a threaded reducing sleeve that you tightened with a 2 pronged spanner. ( these block were still modern legal limited ones) Looking at Whitehills sight I think they may now be bored the correct size with a recess for the...

Tenoner Removing Top Head Nut Multico TM1

Are you saying you bought a perfectly good machine and then sold the heads off it without buying a new set. Therefore making the machine unusable. Why? Other thing to note that if you buy whitehill heads, you won't need a 30mm socket. Whitehill heads come with their own special nuts, if buying...
