    So did you miss me?

Sorry to have deserted you all for an age. Turners bad back, daughters wedding, etc all conspired to keep me preoccupied for quite a few months. Still have some distractions, but hopefully will at least be able to do a few bits

    Balls !!!

Not an expression of exasperation - it is a summary of my activity Thought I'd go for a bowl of them as an alternative to the more standard bowl of fruit. I particularly like the yew ones. They are fantastically tactile and compel the "fiddling with" What do you think?

    Carved Green Man Planter

This started out as tool practice in hollowing. It started out as a Plane Tree Trunk (Tulipwood - I think?) Having turned it I came back to find the base severely cracked from drying. I chucked it to one side and carried on with other things. I moved it a couple of weeks ago and the cracks...

    Buffing and Bristle mops

Hi Readers may recall that I have my particular habit of carving bits out of my work. I have just taken delivery of my chestnut bristle mop as recommended here on the forum. I usually finish using the Beal mop system Anyone know how I should be using these to achieve the "ultimate" finish...

Pole lathe - help needed - a challenge?

Hi all A neighbour has just been to see me with an interesting challenge. They have for many years gone to a village in Uganda, where they help the villagers to help themselves. He would like to take the ingredients to assemble a pole lathe when they go next month. The idea being that they...

    Another Anniversary Bowl

My Wife's Aunt & Uncle recently celebrated their 50th AWedding anniversary so I was pressed into service to personalise a bowl for "Kathleen & Ken's" present. You may recall my earlier bowl with the personalisation carved into the base. I thought I would try something different again. The...

    Not so Lazy Susan

My weekend project was to make my version of an old favourite. The concept being to make a real ball race as a feature of the item. I have taken pictures of it in component parts in case anyone wants to have a go. As far as I am aware this is an original piece as not seen anything like it...

    What people sell

I have been visiting the daughter and dragged tom places out and about including shops. I was unaware of such things under the impression everything came from the inter web! Where we were we went to a craft centre and of course I was drawn as if by magnet to the woodturned items. I was amazed...

    Creativity & Development of concepts

I have been having thoughts when looking at others work of not just an appreciation of what has been created, but also of how I could take an idea and put my own twist to it. Moving that basic concept forward how about another type of thread? Someone post a thread of an original piece and...

Ooh er missus - What a lovely Pair!

I have today received the coveted plaque from Blister, for the Decorated July Platter. In line with tradition I have attached the piccie of plaque and item. They do look good together. Perhaps it can encourage a greater participation in the coming months as I am sure more of you would like one!

    Marquetry Platter

Had a day off today and SWMBO graciously allowed me to spend some of it in the shed. Here is a platter I created using some new techniques which i''ve set out here - but if anyone has any better ideas/methods - please do tell. I turned the outside shape and edge and at that time set a groove...

Carved Beech Bowl - now with added close up piccies!

This is the latest in my "carved bowl" exploration. The bowl has a 12" diameter The thought behind the carved central band is to reflect the random pattern of fallen leaves. For those interested in the process - The carving work was done taking out the deepest levels and moving up around the...

    Anniversary Bowl

I was asked to make a large bowl as a present for a friends Anniversary. The motif inside the bowl was the design of the friend that requested it to be made. I was then asked how I could personalise it for "Sandra and Steve" The immediate idea of German blackshirts jumped to mind but I...

    Simon Hope Vacuum Chuck

Hi all This post is for two reasons, one just to say how good it is, and the other how attentive and helpful Simon has been with my chuck. Anyone thinking of acquiring a vacuum chuck would be delighted with this chuck. I have found it to be a marvellous addition to the "armoury". Whilst it is...

    Monthly Challenge De-Brief

Going back a bit there was discussion about setting something up for beginners and various discussions took place which never really reached a conclusion, it slid down the discussion page and off into oblivion. I have been giving this some thought and offer this as a suggestion. If following...

    Hope Pro Rotary Sander

Among the items I collected from John Davis Woodturning open day 3 July apart from inspiration having watched Simon Hope perform, was the rotary sander he has brought out. I have previously had (and failed to get on with the Sorby version). By way of feed back, now I have had a chance to use...
