Looking for a home for vintage hand mortiser and wooden moulding planes

What a lovely bit of kit, I would certainly give it house room as well as I am always happy to use 'hand tools' even industrial versions such as this one.

How do I remove this bearing

I wholeheartedly agree here. I am sure WD40 has many worthwhile uses and we even buy it in for the workshop for one very specific purpose, however it is pretty much hopeless for preserving things or preventing rust for any period of time.

How do I remove this bearing

Some heat then a bearing puller (It may have been glued into place). For the future, WD40 serves no purpose for such a job, look for PlusGas which is far more effective at freeing up rusted nuts, stuck bearings etc.

    Which wood pilot/countersink

Thank you all for your replies. As woodworking is a hobby to me I was not really aware of Wealden Tool so I will take a closer look although the Rutland one looks perfect for my needs. Gregmcateer, thank you :) They have just turned three and this was taken around their birthday. They are...

    Which wood pilot/countersink

I have just had a set of drill pilots/countersink bits arrive via Amazon and despite being reasonable pricey they are hopeless with the diameter of the countersink all being the same! So can someone recommend some usable countersink/pilot drill bits that do as they are supposed to please.

    Startrite SP147 bandsaw

Well as an update, Ian at Tuff Saw supplied a 3TPI M42 blade, I reset the guides and it is working like a dream on the current gearing. I ended up ordering an Axminster fence which should be here today/tomorrow and will give me something to do over the weekend. It is amazing just how much the...

    Startrite SP147 bandsaw

We have an old Startrite band saw sat in the workshop that I suspect is the Model SP147. My wife grabbed it a few years ago when we were looking at a replacement Mill and it has been occasionally used for cutting aluminium or plastic and mostly gathering dust. We have now moved it to the...

1/2" UN maybe? UN imperial screw thread calculator may be of use.

    Removing rusted wood screws

Cabinetman - Binbrook so not that far. A careful clout with a good fitting screwdriver is reasonably successful however I have snapped a couple off. They are the ones that hold terry spring clips in place so I can always move the clip over by a few mm. It is flat packed now, the carcass is hard...

    Removing rusted wood screws

I spotted an old 'Salmen Master Grade' cabinet the other day, delivered for £20.00 which seemed like a good idea at the time. My plan was to restore it and hang it on the wall for my everyday tools and today I started to break it down to sand, varnish etc. A few things have become apparent, it...

    Double sided tape?

Paraffin works well on tape residue. We use double sided tape a fair bit for holding parts when milling and paraffin is better than acetone, methylated spirits or rubbing alcohol when it comes to removing the residue.

    Guns,guns, and more Guns

Hmm... I have guns, lots of them in fact and I live in the UK. I own some personally and I usually have several dozen customer rifles and shotguns in for work as that is what I do for a living, I mend modify and make guns. I am also very lucky in that I live and work in a sleepy Lincolnshire...

So I have this piece of Lignum Vitae

This was given to me recently and I would have thought it was Lignum Vitae, it certainly looks, smells, feels and weighs like it should be, however I have never seen it split and shake like this before. I wetted the surface to show the colour, otherwise it just looks very old and dusty and has...

Really annoyed myself believing **** online

Enjoy it for what it is, also, write your name and date on the underside. The first 'proper' thing I ever made was a step stool, it was reclaimed wood and I even added some token dovetails. I had no space and no tools and no real idea. Once finished I realised it was not quite as I had...

    Very sad news

RIP Prince Philip. I am disappointed to read so much anti royal sentiment. Prince Philip was a faithful companion to our queen for over 70 years and deserves to be remembered for who as much as what he was. Unfortunately, there are people in this life who seem to have the only goal in life to...

    Top tip

It mostly sticks to it self so I just push some scissors up the side and try not cut myself again. I have a superglued finger right now from a 0.2mm carbide insert...

    Stock Dimensions for Making Boxes

Regarding proportions and dimensions I draw it. I use a CAD package called Sketchup which has a very usable free version and I just draw/design and see how it looks, if the proportions are wrong to my eyes I change it. The actual package is very easy to use, it makes it extremely easy to change...

Hazdent Machine Tools - big wood lathe project!

What lovely machine! I have seen castings repaired in the past using the metal stitching process, it might be worth searching the internet. Silicon Bronze rods and a good sized Tig with some pre-heating might be an option as well although I have not used it on anything quite so big.
