Any plumbers? Am I out of touch?

As a letting agent in nottingham £160-250 is about right. You are down south so i expect you will pay a premium for contractors. Washers etc is daft, by the the time the plumbers has faffed about fiddling with the seating his labour charge will be greater than the cost of a new item. Welcome to...

    Series 3: Britain's Best Woodworker

I think there is the miserable grump syndrome with stuff like this, ooh its not some great cabinet master earnestly shaving 1/10mm off with a finely honed 02 steel chisel. However if that whats wood working was presented as i would never have got started. My kids love it and it gets them...

Looking to buy a block plane

I have like 60 block planes i think i have a problem. However for me the 60 1/2 or 9 1/2 seem the best bang for the pound. I personally like my veritas apron plane. I have some knuckle cap versiosn and i find thema bit bulky. The rebate style seem good but they flex and are very delicate...

    Lied Nielsen No8.

I cant imagine running in effect, a hobby/luxury tool business has been easy in the last few years. With the energy cost rises all that forging and machining must have rocketed. In real terms if you look at some simple material like plywood it has doubled. At the end of the day its a persoanl...

Very very Nice Bling Safe Sliding Saw by Altendorf.

I think the always safe argument is a bit flawed. accidents happen often when people are tired at work, ie they have been out the night before or had a bad nights sleep or are rushing to finish to get home. A saw like that is likely to be in a larger operation with employees. As someone who...

    Woodworking Apron

I have had two vertitas one. Weirdly sold the 1st one on ebay for tenner despite being covered in glue (wife made me sell) what i will say is that the upper straps must be crossed over and not neck one. I briefly tried a conventional neck hanging apron and i could not believe how uncomfortable...

    Which 3d printer - 2023 edition

I too have a bambu x1 with ams after owning a qidi and a budget chinese think. I find that largely i just spend my time focusing on designing things to print as it just prints. Previously i spent nervous hours waiting for an inevitable print error or mistake. Then i would get a jam or something...

Axminster Basingstoke due to close because of "dramatically increasing costs"

I think its easy to blame landlords here, but rent goes up in 10 or 5 year cycles as a rule. It was expected and axminster will have known that rent will be going up. On the whole there is often a shortage of commercial sites so its unlikely that the landlord was being unreasonable. Its is...

    Impressive new tool

dont really undertstand this sort of thing. I like working with my hands and making something as close to handmade as is practical so clearly i have tools routers etc. But at what point is it just a CNC light. In a production evironment they would have cnc so ii think its aimed at hobbyists. I...

    Plane Irons and ProEdge

I have pro-edge, its been really handy as it works as a linisher too. I tend to use it on my plane irons to bring the bevel back after lots of freehand sharpening. Its aggressive so you only need to use it for a second or it overheats blades. I have got excellent results using the very fine...

why is hobby woodworking in decline?

I work in the student sector, i dont think any of this is in decline. Its just an ebb and flo. sometimes crafts are popular sometimes not. the reality is wood is expensive and ready made stuff from abroad in chipboard is pretty cheap. That will change as the reality of global warming on throw...

Should I buy a spindle moulder rather than router table??

i have a spindle moulder (hammer combination machine) and a router table and i used to have a kity 623 with a sliding table. In order of preference i really like the kity 1st as it was small easy to set up and i never felt like i needed a power feed. It was smoother than a router table and while...

    Old hand planes

I personally think on planes that citric acid/ electrolysis leave a pretty poor finish. I perosnally prefer to use scrotch bright pad and buffing (not the awful over polished thing) non woven mops by 3m etc are really good. I find the dull grey look is not good. When i have used the above...
