Comparison between bedrock type 5 1/2 vs LV low angle jack

Hello guys I might be in the market for a new plane. I have a no6 and no4 plane. One I find too big and the other too small. I like the wider cutter of the No6 so I am thinking of buying a no5 1/2. I find the handle on the bedrock, in my case woodriver(bought like 10 years ago) too small. The...

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

What is your view on buying blatant Stanley copies from the US?

    Paul, his version of sharpening

I like Mr Sellers. I dont agree with everything he says, but I dont agree with everything my mother says either. Sellers is probably disliked by people who are in the business of selling new tools because Sellers often says you dont need to buy new tools and his negative view on bevel up...

Will Lie Nielsen ever make a 5 1/2 bronze plane.....?

With cocobolo handles? Those anniversary planes are really beautiful. I wish LN would do this for the 5 1/2. You might wonder why I did not just ask LN company directly, but I guess discussing it on this forum might be an incentive for LN to do so in the future. Ali

Lie Nielsen or Clifton 5 1/2?

Hello everbody. One thing I have noticed in the Clifton 5 1/2 plane is that the sole has a X pattern added on top of the sole to make it more stiff and dimensionally stable I guess. This IMHO is definitely an advantage.

    Nanohone price

No doubt in my mind David that you would acknowledge that the modern sharpening stones are better. It's just that the improvement is marginal. I do think the Sharp Skate is a nice product. It looks like a well made solid product. Then again a 5 buck Eclips can be made to work extremely well...

    Nanohone price

I guess I am paying that amount of cash, I would not accept a tolerance that big. Good find though! Did not think about it that way. The diamonds are dispersed throughout the metal buttons, as the metal abrades, diamond particles appear. In contrast to conventional lapping plates, this...

    Nanohone price

Guys for years the diamond lapping plates of Shapton and DMT were the most expensive plates. Prices about 350 en 200 USD. The Nanohone comes with a plate that is two to three times more expensive! 250 x 70 x 20 mm €739.00 https://www.dictum.com/en/nano-hone-eam ... l-8-711222 Flatness...

does pmv11 create slurry on hard natural stones?

Thank you for your reply. My impression was always that the the natural stones were abrading the soft steel which is is why the black metal "slurry" develops. When I was sharpening a mujingfang hss plane blade(hrc 64) which has no soft steel, the blade was actually creating stone slurry. The...

does pmv11 create slurry on hard natural stones?

Hi Derek. The slurry from the stone is exactly what I am looking for. The HSS steel created stone slurry because of the hard particles(chromium, vanadium, tungsten) the steel is made of. I am wondering whether pmv11 can do the same. The o1, t10 and blue steel can't because they lack those very...

does pmv11 create slurry on hard natural stones?

Hi guys. I have a few hard natural japanese sharpening stones. Stanley, quangsheng t10 and blue steel cannot create slurry on these stones. It feels like I'm rubbing on glass. Creating slurry with a diamond plate or nagura works. Now I do remember being able to create slurry on one of these...

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

I'd like them forged as well, but I think that is too much hassle/time for companies like Lie Nielsen and Veritas. That is why I thought glueing would be an easier/cheaper option. My experience is that the 3mm blades perform much better than the 2mm. The 2mm performs ok when planing easy wood...

Clifton Bench Planes one piece cap iron - anyone tried it

A plane blade should be thick enough to resist bending. A chip breaker should do what it's name says. A thin plane blade with a thick chipbreaker does not perform as well as a thick plane blade with a thin chip breaker, at least not in my experience. I tried this with the thin tsunesaburo...

There are shavings and then there are SHAVINGS!!

I really liked the camera setup that Mr Sellers used in one of his videos. So I tried to do the same thing: View My Video Don't know how to embed unfortunately. ..................................................... Very nice shavings Graham! Ali

The Veritas Custom Planes - more than a review

Guess they don't know about putting a back bevel on a plane iron. The roundness of the plane blades is not my cup of tea. Great functionality, but design...... Rob, if you are reading this thread, how about giving buyers the option of choosing a bailey design adjuster. I like to adjust the...

    Metal plane sole surfaces finishes.

Flattening planes with abrasive paper is a bad method. You are putting body pressure on the plane which is put on abrasive paper that has a certain flatness and this paper is adhered to a plate with a certain flatness. Too many variables. A few final passes after filing or scraping is no...

very thin blades and very thick chip breaker?

Responding to your last paragraph. Couldn't this be solved simply, by making the blade much shorter? Ali

very thin blades and very thick chip breaker?

Well the clifton cap iron is 2 pieces, I meant the flat piece. Perhaps bringing that part closer to the edge might help. Ali
