    Sorry to be leaving

Having not really kept up to date with the forum for a while (many months really), the new layout has been a bit of a shock. It takes a bit of getting used to, for sure, but going by many of the comments over several posts it is the end of the world. The degree of head-shaking, hand-wringing and...

    jarrah wooden railway sleeper

Jarrah has been used for guitars, both electric and acoustic. Beautiful tone. Adam

Identical planes...to tell them apart easily

If there are any brass screwheads showing, polish one of them up and cover with a dab of durable clear finish. Won't change the colour of the rest, avoids having to drill anything out, easy to return to previous condition if needed, and the clear finish should protect from your sweat. Adam

    Finish for discoloured sweet chestnut?

Dont know if it would be appropriate for what you are making, but could you ebonise the wood with vinegar/steel wool? This would maintain the grain and hopefully give you a consistent colour. Adam

    Name this wood please?

Be nice to see the other face, but it is not dissimilar to macassar ebony. With a teensy bit of sapwood. Adam

    the blackest black

Whilst probably not in the same ballpark as what you are trying to achieve, i am halfway through a guitar build that will be gloss black (think Clapton's Blackie). I plan on staining the wood black with Chestnut spirit stain followed by black nitro lacquer. The lacquer rattlecans come in matt as...

    Woodstains, Transtint versus Analine

Regarding the transtint - I don't suppose you have discovered a UK distributor yet have you? I've been aware of its existence for a while courtesy of luthiery forums. Cheers, Adam

    Practical tips for beginners.

That makes sense, and ties in to much advice regarding woodwork - always check that what you are using is correct. Be that measurement, edge sharpness, grain direction etc. And it applies to glue as well. I have used the D4 glue, but the bottle seemed to recommend using only within 6 months (or...

    Practical tips for beginners.

A couple of things, have scouted over this thread (which is an ace idea, by the way). 1) Buy more (and better) clamps than you think you will need. There is no such thing as too many clamps. Memzey posted a while back about not using PVA glue that has been left around too long. A good piece of...

    Tuffsaw blades vs Axminster

Perhaps the best thing with Tuffsaws (apart from their rather superb blades) is the level of customer service you receive. I have purchased several blades from them (and am another of those weekend warriors, intermittently at that) and have had one break at the weld. A replacement, free of...

    How To Buy Hardwoods

Thanks for that, Custard. It's interesting you say that because some of the horse chestnut I am using for guitar bodies does feel a little 'soft', but some of it gives the impression of being more like a sycamore in it's shavings and surface finish. Having said that, there is no finish on it...

    How To Buy Hardwoods

I have a couple of smallish planks of hornbeam - some straight and some ripply grained. Lovely to work, but only about 3/4-1" thick. If there was anything specific you wanted, I could cut a bit off. Adam

    How To Buy Hardwoods

Thanks for a very informative set of posts there, Custard. May I ask why Horse Chestnut is not recommended? I ask specifically because I have recently received a couple of blocks from David Dykes' place in W Sussex to build some guitars. I know guitars and furniture have a different set of...

    A french polish question...

Thanks for that - seems to tie in with what I thought. I shall see if a sample hardens overnight. Are you saying it should be rock-hard? I still have plenty of flakes (stored in the dark, wrapped, in a toolbox, in the garage) and IPA, so mixing up more shouldn't be a problem. I just don't like...

    A french polish question...

Greetings folks, I have a quick question for anyone who french polishes. How long is french polish likely to last for in bottle? I made up some FP about 3 years ago (flakes into isopropyl alc and stored in plastic screw-top containers) and would like to know if it is worthwhile still using it...

Anyone managed to reduce blood pressure naturally ?

Don't let your age discount you for taking mess if necessary. Hypertension and its consequences don't really care how old you are. Good advice above, especially about reducing caffeine. No need to stop entirely, but it can make a difference. If you already exercise and are of a good weight, then...

    Diabetes Screening

Theres quite a difference between a-level maths completed when 18, and the application of that when a specialist doctor age 30+. The pros and cons of health screening is a huge and complex area, and not one that benefits from personal anecdote. When you are dealing with many thousands/millions...

    Anyone back to baking yet?

Phil P - Yep, thats the ticket. I followed the BakeryBits recipe which suggested the osmotolerant yeast. Its not something that I have in my storecupboard (unlike their suggested flour....), but I'll get some next time I place an order. Anyway, here's a couple piccies of the finished loaf. It's...

    Anyone back to baking yet?

Just taken some panettone out of the oven. Dont have high hopes - took about 24 hours to rise... Large amount of butter/sugar/egg in the dough that the yeast doesnt like too much.... Needs to cool a bit before cutting.... Adam
