    Please help me get inspired

I think your all very lucky, well most of you anyway. I'm a cabinet maker, living in Shropshire. I've inly ever worked for other people as I can't raise the funds to set up a workshop, and no idea how to get work in. My family and I dream of moving to Devon, but without an income it can't...

    Rutlands - pricing and reviews?

I've had a couple of bad experiences, if you look back on here a couple of years I've mentioned them before. Haven't used them since and have no intention of using them in the future.

How to cover the wood grain for painting?

This depends on the type of timber and the finish your using. But if it's soft wood and gloss then a coat or two of knotting solution, followed by primer, undercoat and gloss is the recommended procedure.

    Jet 1014I bearing life?

I have a small jet lathe I think it's the same model but not 100% without checking. I've had it for around 7 years, admittedly I don't use it every day and it did have to spend 18 months in storage but I've used it frequently for the past 6 months again and everything is still perfect. I'd be...

Where to make a living making hand-made?

I think the problem with s lot of crafts, and I must add the caveat that I'm not getting at or saying this is wrong, but in most crafts especially the woodworking ones box making, turning etc. The market is saturated with hobbyists and retired people whom are happy to just recoup costs for...

Just when I thought I was getting a bit saner...

I owned a Capri and lost the key somewhere, but it was alright I unlocked it and started the engine with my mum and dads front door Yale key. I never replaced the original and it stayed that way for the next 18 months or so.

The start of a new addiction.

Hi guys, I've never posted in this section before, but I'm slowly being converted to the idea of scrolling. So along with many other people I assume, I have been looking into buying a scroll saw, and along with everyone else I am facing the inevitable question of which to buy within an...

How do I sharpen pencils with long leads?

Personally I would recommend roughing the point out with a Stanley style knife followed by the scary sharp method, ending with a secondary bevel using a 6000 grit water stone. In my opinion never hollow grind a pencil, the strength in the lead will be affected, with the exception of a Japanese...

Double sided real wood veneer enquiry

I don't understand what your asking. Normal veneer is 0.6mm thick and as Andy said constructional veneer is thicker. Both are by nature 'double sided' as they are slices of timber. I doubt your talking about veneered boards as they don't come that thin, and would be veneered both sides to...

    Which is at fault

I too have always aimed to be 0.5mm under sized, another thought is have you soaked the timber in oil of any sort? I use linseed and soak for differing lengths of time for different timbers. On beech for example I apply a very heavy coat, leave it 15 mins, wipe off the excess and start...

    work bench question

I've been using 4 sheets of standard 18mm MDF ad a bench top for about 10years now and it's still holding ip well. I've also never worked in a workshop where the bench tops weren't MDF. In my opinion it's and ideal worktop material, stable and solid. If you get the type of moisture required to...
